Berry Smash

A delightfully refreshing way to recover after a big holiday meal, this adaptable recipe can be used with a variety of berries.

MAKES 1 DRINK

1/2 cup [70 g] fresh or frozen and thawed berries (such as blackberries, blueberries, or raspberries)

2 or 3 mint leaves, plus more for garnish

3 oz [90 ml] vodka

1 oz [30 ml] Simple Syrup (page 23)

Club soda, for topping off

Fill a tumbler with ice. Put the berries in a shaker glass. Smash the berries with a muddler or wooden spoon until they have released all their juices. Crumple the mint leaves and add to the shaker along with the vodka, simple syrup, and ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into the tumbler, leaving about 2 in [5 cm] of space at the top (you will have extra of the mixture). Top off with club soda.
