Hot Buttered Rum

Lore has it that in the eighteenth century, American politicians used this warm concoction to woo supporters. The butter adds a silky texture to this delightful classic.

MAKES 1 DRINK

1 tsp brown sugar

4 to 6 oz [120 to 180 ml] boiling water

11/2 oz [45 ml] dark rum

1 Tbsp butter

Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish

Put the brown sugar into a heatproof glass punch cup and fill two-thirds full with boiling water. Add the rum and butter. Wait until the butter melts, then stir and sprinkle a little nutmeg on top.
