Lore has it that in the eighteenth century, American politicians used this warm concoction to woo supporters. The butter adds a silky texture to this delightful classic.
MAKES 1 DRINK
1 tsp brown sugar
4 to 6 oz [120 to 180 ml] boiling water
11/2 oz [45 ml] dark rum
1 Tbsp butter
Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish
Put the brown sugar into a heatproof glass punch cup and fill two-thirds full with boiling water. Add the rum and butter. Wait until the butter melts, then stir and sprinkle a little nutmeg on top.
