Hot Buttered Wine

This is a good alternative to the more potent Hot Buttered Rum (facing page). The mingled scents of maple syrup and wine will soothe your nerves while the heat warms you.

MAKES 1 DRINK

6 oz [180 ml] dessert wine, such as sherry or port

21/2 oz [75 ml] water

2 tsp maple syrup

1 tsp butter

Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish

Add the wine and water to a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat to just simmering; do not allow to boil. Pour the heated wine mixture into a glass and add the maple syrup and butter. Stir and sprinkle with a little nutmeg.
