The police are contacted by Elliott Wedren at 11:03 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017, and Mr. Wedren reports that his car has been stolen. Officers Kenny Daniels and Anthony Baker are dispatched to Mr. Wedren’s residence at 62 Cherry Tree Drive. They arrive at 11:16 a.m. Mr. Wedren explains that he stepped out of his home that morning with the intention of driving to the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket to do his weekly food shopping when he discovered that his 2014 Mini Cooper Countryman was missing from his driveway. He had parked it there after returning from his job at Wegman’s Hardware Store at approximately 5:20 p.m. on March 3, 2017.

Officer Baker asks if any other member of Mr. Wedren’s family has keys to the Mini Cooper. Mr. Wedren explains that his wife, Ethyl, does, but she has been in Martha’s Vineyard visiting her sick aunt since February 28 and is not expected to return home until March 11. A call placed to Ethyl Wedren confirms that she is still in Martha's Vineyard. Mr. Wedren explains that he and his wife do not have any children and no member of his extended family has keys to the Mini Cooper.

Officer Daniels visits the neighbors at 61 Cherry Tree Drive, located directly across the street from Mr. Wedren’s house. Mrs. Veronica Townshend, age 47, answers the door, but she explains that she did not notice any suspicious activity outside the Wedren residence the previous night or the current morning.

Officer Daniels then visits Mr. Wedren’s next-door neighbor living at 60 Cherry Tree Drive, Mr. Leland Kurtz. Mr. Kurtz explains that he did notice someone outside the Wedren residence after Mr. Kurtz stepped outside to water his lawn at 7:10 a.m. on March 4. Mr. Kurtz describes the individual as an Asian male, approximately 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches, 170 lbs, and bald. While Mr. Kurtz noticed the man on the Wedrens’ property, he did not actually witness the man stealing the car.

Officer Daniels then returns to the Wedrens' residence. During his absence, Officer Baker learned that Mr. Wedren is 35 years old while his wife, Ethyl, is 43. Their home telephone number is 376-0978. Mr. Wedren’s cell phone number is 645-4556. Mrs. Wedren’s cell phone number is 756-4444. Officer Daniels fills out a complete crime report.

However, on Thursdays, Ana normally goes to piano lessons at the home of Mrs. Agatha Krieg, who lives at 121 Murray Street. 8. Questions 6–8

Use the following passage to answer questions 6–8.

Police officers Dale Horne and Audrey Cooper are dispatched to 21 Sparkwood Avenue, Apt. 403, at 9:01 p.m. on May 22, 2016, in response to a burglary reported by Mr. Will Frost. They arrive at the apartment at 9:10 p.m., ring the doorbell, and Mrs. Eileen Frost and Mr. Will Frost greet them. Mr. Frost tells the officers that he left his job at Deer Meadow Hospital, where he works as an orderly, at 7:00 p.m. After work he met his wife, Eileen, for dinner at Mary’s Diner on 21st Street, where the two dined until approximately 8:30 p.m. Upon returning home at approximately 8:41 p.m., Mr. and Mrs. Frost noticed that the lock on their front door was broken. After entering their home they discovered that both of their wedding rings, each valued at $3,000, were missing from the top of their dresser in the bedroom. Mr. Frost explains that he always removed his wedding ring before going to work at the hospital because he was afraid to lose it. Mrs. Frost did the same before going to work at the Fine Arts art studio because she did not want to get paint on her ring. Mrs. Frost then discovered that the rest of her jewelry collection, valued at an additional $8,000, was also missing from a box above the bathroom medicine chest.

While Officer Horne fills out a crime report, Officer Cooper goes to other apartments on the Frosts’ floor to interview neighbors who may have any information related to the burglary.

Mrs. Hayward, age 27, a computer programmer who lives in Apt. 404, tells Officer Cooper that she heard a banging sound in the hallway at approximately 6:45 p.m. She assumed it was the superintendent repairing a piece of molding in the hallway that had been broken for the past two weeks and paid the noise no mind.

Officer Cooper then knocks on the door of Apt. 401. A Mr. Truman, age 81, answers the door. He confirms the noise at 6:45 p.m. and explains that he opened his door to see a woman crouched at the door of Apt. 403. The woman claimed to be a locksmith replacing a broken lock. Mr. Truman describes the woman as approximately 25 years old, 5 feet 11 inches, 150 lbs, with short red hair, green eyes, and dental braces. Officer Cooper then knocks on the doors of apartments 402 and 405, but no other residents answer their doors.

Officer Cooper then returns to apartment 403 to tell her partner what she has learned. In the meantime, Mrs. Frost explains to Officer Horne that Mrs. Frost’s niece, who has a criminal record for shoplifting and drug offenses, often admired her jewelry collection. The niece, Ms. Sheryl Palmer, is described as 24 years old, 6 feet tall, "thin," with short, strawberry-blonde hair, green eyes, and braces on her teeth. The Frosts do not know Ms. Palmer's current address, because she has been "crashing with friends" due to conflicts with her parents, according to Mrs. Frost.

Officer Horne is also told that Mr. Frost is 54 years old, and Mrs. Frost is 52 years old. Her telephone number at work is 475-8676 and her work address is 3 Peaks Lane. The Frosts' home telephone number is 657-7546.
