Questions 44–46
Use the passage below to answer questions 44–46.
While on foot patrol early one weekday morning, Officers Fulton and Watkins are walking through Hilltop Park when they hear shouting, followed by a woman’s screams. They run to the site of the incident, at the western edge of the park along Addison Avenue at Pine Street. (The park is bordered by Addison Avenue on the west, Oak Street on the north, Beverly Avenue on the east, and Ash Street on the south. Pine Street dead-ends at the western edge of the park.) Two women are standing on the sidewalk just outside the park gate. One of the women is holding the side of her neck, which is bleeding profusely. Both women are screaming. A bystander has taken off his shirt and is pressing it against the bleeding woman’s neck. Another bystander tells the officers that she’s called an ambulance on her cell phone.
Officer Fulton reports the incident, while Officer Watkins tends to the woman’s injury. She’s been cut on the right side of the neck; the cut is approximately 6 inches long, but fortunately has missed the major blood vessels. The ambulance arrives and as the paramedics tend to the victim, the officers interview the two bystanders and the victim’s friend.
The friend is Maureen McGowan; she tells the officers that the victim is her roommate, Kelley Masters. They live at 475 Oak Street, two blocks east of the park; they usually leave for work together and walk through the park to the bus stop at the corner of Addison Avenue and Ash Street. This morning, they’d followed their usual routine. As they reached the gate at Pine Street, they saw a man who often loitered on their block. Ms. McGowan said they know him only as Chill. She isn’t sure where he lives; a neighbor told her Chill had recently been released from prison and moved in with his grandmother somewhere nearby. Chill had a large male dog that he walked without a leash; Ms. Masters also has a dog, a medium-sized female. Over the past several months, Ms. Masters has had many arguments with Chill; his dog regularly snarled and lunged at her dog and once had torn her dog’s ear. He refused to leash the dog or keep it off hers. Ms. McGowan said the most recent argument had occurred early this morning. Ms. Masters had taken her dog out for a walk and had returned very angry; she had seen Chill, who immediately started yelling at her. He said his dog had been taken away by Animal Control and he blamed Ms. Masters for calling the city. Ms. Masters denied it, but he continued shouting at her, following her to the door of her building. Ms. Masters and Ms. McGowan discussed what to do; Ms. Masters said she would call the precinct house when she arrived at work.
Ms. McGowan said Chill had been waiting for them behind the bushes near the Pine Street gate. “He just jumped out and grabbed Kelley’s arm and started yelling at her,” she said. Both Ms. McGowan and Ms. Masters shouted at him to leave them alone. Ms. McGowan said she saw Chill step back and thought he was leaving, until he lunged forward with the knife. After slashing Ms. Masters’s neck, he ran away; Ms. McGowan did not see which direction he took.
The male witness, Clancy Washington, said he’d just returned from buying a newspaper and some juice at the deli across Addison Avenue when he saw the man and two women shouting. “I thought it was some kind of boyfriend/girlfriend thing at first,” he said. “Then when he stepped back and pulled out the knife, I thought, ‘Oh, man, this is serious.’” He said he began running toward the man, but before he could reach him, the man slashed Ms. Masters and ran away. Mr. Washington said he’d run north, toward Oak Street; he wasn’t sure if the man had turned at Oak or continued north. By then, he was trying to help Ms. Masters stanch the blood from her cut.
The female witness, Marisol Alvarez, did not see the slashing incident. She was walking south along the park on the eastern edge of Addison Avenue, heading for the bus stop at Addison and Ash. She heard shouting, then screaming, and a man came running toward her. “He almost knocked me down,” she said. “He smelled bad, too, like he hadn’t bathed in days. And his eyes were all red and crazy. He was scary.” Ms. Alvarez said she turned and watched him run north then cut through the northwest corner of the park, heading east on Oak Street. The screaming continued and when she got past the bushes near the Pine Street gate, she saw that a woman had been injured, so she called for an ambulance on her cell phone.
Ms. Alvarez, Mr. Washington, and Ms. McGowan gave the officers a description of Chill: white male, late 20s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches and 160 pounds, shaved head, multiple ear piercings, and several large tattoos on his forearms, including an eagle clutching a swastika on his left forearm.
Who notified the precinct house of the slashing incident?
Who witnessed the attack on Kelley Masters?
Why didn’t the two women avoid Chill that morning?
Questions 47–49
Use the passage below to answer questions 47–49.
Officers Travis and Benson responded to a 911 call about a man standing in the middle of a residential street, waving a gun and threatening passersby. The officers located the man on Polk Avenue, between First and Second Streets. As they approached in their vehicle, the man, who was dressed only in a pair of underwear and rain boots, warned them to stay back. However, he did not point the weapon at the officers or their vehicle.
While still inside the vehicle, Officer Travis directed the suspect over the car's PA system to set down his weapon. The suspect rambled incoherently for about 30 seconds as Officer Travis continued to order the suspect to drop the weapon. Eventually, the suspect laid the gun on the pavement and stepped away. Both officers then approached the suspect and ordered him to lie down on the pavement, which he did. The suspect was then handcuffed and placed in the patrol vehicle.
The suspect was identified as Thomas Wayne, who lived at 312 Polk Avenue. The officers then obtained statements from witnesses at the scene.
Gayle Staubach, Thomas Wayne's next-door neighbor, stated that she had heard both male and female voices yelling from inside the Wayne house. She then saw a black SUV, which she described as belonging to the suspect's wife, Virginia Wayne, pull out of their garage and travel west down Polk Avenue at a high rate of speed. Less than a minute later, she saw Thomas Wayne walk into the street, carrying a gun and screaming that he was going to shoot himself. She immediately phoned the police and remained inside, but continued to observe Wayne through her upstairs bedroom window until officers arrived on the scene.
Kenneth Randowski, who lives directly across the street from the Waynes, stated that he was returning home from walking his dog around the block when he first saw Thomas Wayne in the street. As Randowski walked along the sidewalk, Thomas Wayne turned toward him and shouted, "Don't try to stop me, or I'll shoot you too!" Wayne then waved the gun in Randowski's direction. Randowski hurriedly cut through his neighbor's yard and went inside his own house, locking the door behind him. He then called the police.
Jacob Page was staying as a guest at another neighbor's house, two doors down from Thomas Wayne's residence. Page was smoking on the front porch of the house when he saw Thomas Wayne walk out into the street with a gun. Page could hear that Wayne was shouting, but could not make out what he was saying. Page then went back inside.
Virginia Wayne was later located, staying at a
friend's house. She stated that Thomas had become upset over texts she had
received from a male coworker. After the two argued for several minutes, Virginia
decided to leave the house in an attempt to defuse the situation.
Which of the following people does NOT live on Polk Avenue?
Who did Thomas Wayne threaten to shoot?
