‘Hello, how can I help you?’
‘Mum?’
‘Jordan, love. Where are you?’
‘I just got home. I saw your note. Sorry I worried you.’
‘That doesn’t matter. Where have you been?’
‘I went over to a mate’s house. Dad put something online, some bullshit about family being the most important thing. I couldn’t be around him.’
‘That’s okay, love. I’m going to come home as soon as I can.’
‘Why? What’s he done?’
‘No. It’s not about your dad. It’s about Mel. The police are going to come over to explain some things.’
‘What things? Please don’t make me wait until you get home. Tell me whatever you know now.’
‘Okay, love. They’ve found her killer. It was the groundskeeper on the estate.’
‘What?’
‘They’ve charged him with murder.’
‘But how did he know Mel? Was it anything to do with the other guys that lived there?’
‘The police only mentioned arresting him. I guess they’ll be able to tell us more when they come over.’
‘God, Mum. I’ve made such a huge mess of everything. Since Mel died, I’ve not been thinking right.’
‘It’s okay, love. I’ll be home soon. We can have a cuddle. Things won’t always feel this bad.’
‘You promise?’
‘Promise.’
