Author Note

This book continues the story of the Wentworth family. The younger girls are now old enough to enter the world of high society in Regency London and Bath.

It was an exciting world of elegance and sophistication, when civilized living was based upon the highest standards of manners, fashions, architecture, furniture making and a love of good food and wine. Certain essential accomplishments were demanded of both men and women, but in return the aristocracy enjoyed most delightful lives of luxury.

Yet there was a darker side to this world of pleasure. Intrigue and gossip were rife, and a woman was always in danger of losing her reputation by a single act of folly. Once lost, it could never be recovered. Then there were those who prowled the fringes of society, searching out the vulnerable in an effort to make their own fortunes. They ran great risks, of course, as did their victims, for the law was harsh in dealing with fraud or offences against property.

This is the story of one such plot against an innocent girl. Fortunately, she has good friends, like Perdita—the heroine of this novel. Amy, Perdita’s sister, is the heroine of the next book in the series. Look for The Matchmaker’s Marriage—coming soon!
