Plate 19 Kachi Durumagi was worn by young children on New Year’s Day at the end of the Joseon period. The name Kachi was taken from the word for a bird, magpie, which was supposed to bring good news the day before New Year’s Day, and signifies a desire to enjoy the New Year. The color of Git (neck band) represents the gender of wearers: blue for a boy and purplish-red for a girl. Kachi Durumagi was also used for the clothing worn on the first birthday, using the colors of the Five Elements to keep evil spirits away and to wish for a long life for the child (Kim 1987: 132–35).
