We’ve gone to a lot of effort to ensure that the eleventh edition of The Rough Guide to Morocco is accurate and up-to-date. However, things change – places get “discovered”, opening hours are notoriously fickle, restaurants and rooms raise prices or lower standards. If you feel we’ve got it wrong or left something out, we’d like to know, and if you can remember the address, the price, the hours, the phone number, so much the better.
Please send your comments with the subject line “Rough Guide Morocco Update” to mail@uk.roughguides.com. We’ll credit all contributions and send a copy of the next edition (or any other Rough Guide if you prefer) for the very best emails.

Keith Drew has travelled in nearly sixty countries but has yet to visit another city quite as bewitching as Fez, or drive on mountain roads quite as hairy as the High Atlas’s. Publisher at Rough Guides, he is also co-author of the Rough Guide to Costa Rica and, slightly closer to home, the Rough Guide to Bath, Bristol & Somerset.
Chris Griffiths immediately fell in love with the diversity of Morocco’s landscapes, cultures and architecture, and has now settled there permanently. Based in the Middle Atlas region, Chris is frequently on the road and most enjoys spending time in laid-back oasis villages. As a graduate of journalism and a keen backpacker, he is passionate about travel-based media.
Thomas Hollowell has been living in Morocco since 2002. He’s currently based in the Middle Atlas Mountains and helps to run a Morocco tour company called Journey Beyond Travel. He has written both travel and sport-related books.
Darren Humphrys is a writer, photographer and tour guide who left his native Australia in 1997 for an African safari – and stayed. Now residing in his adopted homeland of South Africa and a self-confessed “Africa-phile,” he has been leading tours to Morocco since 2001 with his company Compass Odyssey ( compassodyssey.net). Darren has contributed text and images of his favorite North African country to various guidebooks, travel publications and image libraries.
Daniel Jacobs has worked on Rough Guides to West Africa, Tunisia, Egypt, Israel/Palestine, Kenya, India, Mexico, Brazil and Colombia.
Martin Zatko has been more or less constantly on the move since early 2002, during that time writing or co-updating the Rough Guides to Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Turkey and Europe. He’s a big fan of Morocco’s far south, and its various fascinatingly desolate landscapes.
Chris Griffiths would like to thank Naim Souhel for his expert knowledge of the Dades and Todra Gorges, and Kolin Goncalves for his help mapping the Middle Atlas. He would also like to thank Lahsen Alkouch and Abdel Karim for his assistance in researching the Sahara region.
Thomas Hollowell would like to thank Fazia for her genuine support throughout the research and writing of the guidebook. He would also like to thank Omar Jellah, who he considers to be the best mountain guide in the country, for his dedicated work and unprecedented knowledge of the Atlas Mountains.
Darren Humphrys Shukrran bezzef to khouya Rachid Nassar, Hassan el Janah and Bouchaib Boudki, and love as always to their families. Thanks also to all the staff at Moroccan Club Travel in Marrakesh. A final thank you to my wife Kate, for allowing me to follow my dreams while keeping the home fires burning and taking care of Henry, Olive and Hume.
Daniel Jacobs Thanks to Chris Silver, Mohammed Ben-Madani, Abdellilah Alami and Marc Dubin, to Faiçal Alaoui at Morocco Tourism in London, and to my colleagues Thomas Hollowell, Darren Humphrys and Helen Abramson.
Martin Zatko would like to thank Around Morocco Tours for their assistance with accommodation during his time in the far south, and Sahara Services for their help with transport. He would also like to thank John Tipper for his company throughout the trip, and for limiting our car crashes to one minor beaching in the sand.
The publishers would like to acknowledge the work of Hamish Brown, Keith Drew, Mark Ellingham, Daniel Jacobs and Shaun McVeigh on previous editions of this guide.

Published in 1982, the first Rough Guide – to Greece – was a student scheme that became a publishing phenomenon. Mark Ellingham, a recent graduate in English from Bristol University, had been travelling in Greece the previous summer and couldn’t find the right guidebook. With a small group of friends he wrote his own guide, combining a highly contemporary, journalistic style with a thoroughly practical approach to travellers’ needs.
The immediate success of the book spawned a series that rapidly covered dozens of destinations. And, in addition to impecunious backpackers, Rough Guides soon acquired a much broader readership that relished the guides’ wit and inquisitiveness as much as their enthusiastic, critical approach and value-for-money ethos.
These days, Rough Guides include recommendations from budget to luxury and cover more than 120 destinations around the globe, as well as producing an ever-growing range of ebooks.
