Chapter 10

image

Pushing open the heavy metal door, Brenda was suddenly confronted by half a dozen reporters. Kyle Hastings was standing there in front as if he’d earned some kind of right to bulldoze his way to the head of the class.

“Hey, Brenda!” he yelled as if they were old friends. “Brenda! Can we talk for just a second?” His face contorted into what she supposed was his attempt at looking hopeful and harmless, but he came across looking as goofy as a little kid trying to be cute after receiving a stern look from his teacher.

The rest of those gathered seemed to follow Kyle’s lead.

“Brenda! Over here. Can we have just a second?”

“Brenda! Just a few quick questions for you.”

She never liked the press, even when she was doing well. They seemed to revel in catastrophe and, in this city, she’d have thought they’d find better things to write about. Maybe something about the abandoned buildings no one was claiming on the west side that were starting to attract unsavory elements, or how the Mayor traveled around with at least three SUVs in his entourage everywhere he went. There were plenty of real things to get readers riled up. What were they hanging around the skating rink for? She soon found out.

“Miss Wagner, are you going to be competing again?”

“Brenda, your injuries were severe. Do you think you’ll ever be as good as you were?”

“Is there anyone you see as a particular threat in there?”

“Can you name your biggest challenger?”

“How do the other girls feel having you back?”

Brenda clenched her teeth, squared her shoulders, and pushed her way through the crowd toward her parents’ car, but the reporters just wouldn’t leave her alone. The questions they were shouting weren’t even worthy of answers. They were rude and antagonistic, and Brenda was just about to let loose with a flurry of insults enough to make a pastor blush when she saw a familiar face.
