PREFACE

At the New York School of Interior Design, we cover the full spectrum of the profession, from commercial office and retail to hospitality and health care. But even as the practice of design becomes increasingly multidisciplinary, its foundation rests firmly on residential roots. An understanding of the domestic environment is integral to our thinking about spaces of all scales and project types. Whether teaching students how to design a luxury spa, a hotel lobby, or the headquarters of a Silicon Valley start-up, we plumb the complex relationship between individuals and their physical surroundings—home being a microcosm of every facet of that dynamic.

Professionalism underwrites every course we teach, even those that cater to novices or continuing education students who may not be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in interior design. As educators, we never underestimate anyone who wants to embark on a comprehensive study of the field.
