Rain thrashed against the windows and the wind sped around the playground like a wild beast. It was such a stormy night nobody wanted to go outside, but the classrooms at Station Road School were ready for visitors. Tonight was Open Classroom Night, and all the teachers had invited parents to come and admire their children’s stunning school work.

Miss May sat alone in Room 28 and looked at the striking animal masks on the wall. She put her head on her desk and sighed, “Nobody would want to come out on a dreadful night like this.”

When she looked up she got a big fright, for there in the middle of the room was a visitor. Not a mother or father, nor an uncle or aunty, and not even one of her pupils. There in the middle of the room stood a beautiful cat.

“What a terrible night,” moaned Miss May.

The cat started to walk slowly in a big circle about the room, and as he walked he looked at everything very carefully.

“It could be worse,” replied the cat in a very polite voice. “You could be on your way to school and your car could have blown …”
