“… up because you forgot to put any oil in it. All the bits of your car would have stuck to all the bits of other cars going past. This would have made you very cross and all the other drivers very cross.

You would have had to walk to school and on the way you would have stepped in dog poo. (Not cat poo. We are very careful about things like that.) When you tried to get it off your shoe you would have accidentally got it all over your bag. Oh, what a terrible stink!

You would have thrown your bag on the ground and your keys would have fallen down a drain. When you reached to get them out, your hand would have got stuck in the grille. When the fire brigade came to rescue you they would have had to cover their noses.

At school you would have had to take off your stinky clothes and choose something from the Drama Dress Box. You would have had to dress up as a cow all day as all the other clothes would only fit the children.”

The cat looked at the teacher with a long, hard stare and said, “Now that would be TERRIBLE!”

The cat turned around and walked to another wall of the classroom to admire the spectacular collages — of cats, as it happened.

“Aren’t these great,” he said. “All the cool colours just jump out at you. I could sit and look at them for hours. Cats eh, how good is that!”

Miss May smiled at the cat’s compliments, but when she caught sight of the wild, wild night outside the classroom window she heaved another tremendous sigh.

“Oh, what a terrible, stormy night,” Miss May moaned.

“It could be worse,” replied the cat in a very polite voice. “We could be trapped …”
