Recordkeeping is an important tool for the successful freelance writer. It’s important to keep accurate records for tax season, but it’s equally important to keep accurate submission records. Failure to do so could lead to some embarrassing double submissions or result in missed opportunities to follow up. Plus, an organized writer always impresses editors and agents.

On the next page is a sample submission tracker spreadsheet. You can make copies of the one in this book to help you keep records, or you can create a similar spreadsheet on your computer using a spreadsheet program. This submission tracker has nine columns:

• MANUSCRIPT TITLE. This is the title of your manuscript.
• MARKET. This is the name of the magazine, book publisher, contest, or other entity to which you’ve submitted your manuscript.
• CONTACT NAME. This is the name of the editor, agent, or other contact who’s received your work.
• DATE SENT. The date you submitted your manuscript.
• DATE RETURNED. The date your manuscript was rejected.
• DATE ACCEPTED. The date your manuscript was accepted.
• DATE PUBLISHED. The date your manuscript was published.
• PAYMENT RECEIVED. Detail any payment received.
• COMMENTS. This column is for any other notes about your experience with the market.
