Chapter two

Dom! I hadn't realized just how much I had missed him. Feeling his presence once the plane landed filled my body with a joy I didn't recognize. Was this what I was missing while I was gone? A deeper thought demanded to know if the hole of not having Dom around is what caused seeing Mike to be so intense. I don't know.

The plane taxied to its spot. I happily bounced in my seat with anticipation- bag in hand. As soon as the attendant lowered the stairs, I was out of my seat rushing out the door.

Thank you!” I shouted over my shoulder.

Dominic stood in all his glorious beauty just off the tarmac. He was clad in all black. His sleeveless shirt showed every tattoo that had been expertly carved into his skin. I had never seen Dom look like an avenging angel until that moment- it was breathtaking. I rushed into his waiting arms.

Emma!” His word was an electric jolt to my system.

Dom.. I've missed you so.” I sobbed out at him.

Almost a whole week and no word. I was so worried, mia bella. I was beginning to wonder if I should contact the school about you having a late start.” His pout was visible.

Almost a week?!” I didn't believe I was gone that long.

Yes! Did you fall into a black hole? How could you not know how long you were gone?” His eyes pierced my very soul when he looked so deep into mine.

My heart beat just slightly faster, but it didn't matter, he'd hear it if it was just the slightest increase. “ I, ah, was, um, away. You know that.” I smiled sheepishly at him.

He seemed to debate within on whether or not to push the matter. The decision was clear- he would allow it to drop for now. I still wasn't sure just how much of my trip I should reveal to him. “So, we're going to have to get you settled and ready for classes as they start the day after tomorrow. I went by to get your schedule, but they said there was some last minute changes and that you could pick it up on the first day.” Dom lingered over the thought that the changes might have to do with my trip- I could easily read it on his face.

Wow! Time flies fast. So what needs to get done?” Dom's bike was behind him, he handed me a helmet.

Come on. Let's start by getting you home.” He tied my bag to the back of the bike and then hopped on.

Kay.” I climbed on behind him, the very scent of him sent waves of excitement through me- clearly I had missed him.

The ride home was a mixture of flashes of places I knew and loved and whirls of blurred images. The night sky was kissed with the brisk fall air that I loved to feel sweep across my face. I wanted to lean back and feel the moonlight dance its way over my skin, but I didn't want to throw the bike off balance.

Emma, mia bella, I missed you so. Did you at least have a pleasant trip? His words tickled my mind in the most intense way.

Yes. It was an interesting trip. I'll tell you about it when we get home. I don't want us to die out here because I was distracting you with my lame old trip. But you have to tell me everything that's going on with Bella Notte. I beamed back at him, I quickly decided that I needed to tell Dominic everything except the weird dream that Bernie had, so we had no lies between us.

When we're home then. He let the silence drift between us like static on a dead radio, I didn't like it.

The rest of the ride was spent in this fashion, which in turn caused me to desperately try not to fidget. I allowed my mind to wander back to England and everything that had happened. The entire trip was insanely strange. How will I tell Dom about all this nonsense? I knew him well enough to know that he would think me foolish for keeping it all a secret to begin with. Then I remembered why I had to keep it a secret in the first place- that god-awful dream about his sister.

I sighed out into the cool night air, and missed the fact that my breath no longer made little puffs of smoke.

What's wrong? There was no alarm in his voice.

Nothing, my love. I sighed internally for having to lie once more. I knew I needed to tell him, but how was an entirely different story.

We crossed the water, and I secretly laughed to myself about that old legend about running water stopping vampires in their tracks. Clearly, it was nothing more than a silly myth. I wonder where and how that one got started? The sleek bike made small crunching sounds on the well-worn road of this lovely enchanted place. Dominic's castle like home towered above us as we pulled up. I could easily see the tower-like rounded corner where my room was located. The rich sea air was damp, but so welcoming. I even had to admit to myself that I missed the spooktastic catacombs under the house.

Welcome home, mia bella. It hasn't been the same without you.” His words echoed through my body as though he had said them straight to my heart.

Oh, Dom!” I clung to him as we got off the bike. “I don't know where to begin! I want, no I need to tell you so much!” The words rushed from my mouth.

Emma, hush. Calm my love. Whatever is the matter?” He stroked my straight black hair.

Oh, so much. And your sister!” The mere mention of Issy sent me into hysteria.

Emma, what about Isabella? What's wrong, my love?” His hold tightened around me, as though to protect me from whatever was causing my tears.

I could do no more than shake my head.

Come, let's get inside where it's warm and I'll make you some tea.” Dominic led me up the well-worn stone stairs into my home.

The kitchen was so welcoming after being at Betty's with her strange rooms and servants. The beautiful tile floor, with its warm hues, and the vast open space, with the light pouring in during the day- it was just what I needed. Dom set the kettle and retrieved a blanket from one of the many closets, he placed it around me. The gesture was reassuring, even if the blanket wouldn't change my naturally cool body temperature.

He placed the steaming cup in front of me, I could smell the naturally calming herbs and the hint of blood he must have mixed in.

Drink this, mia bella.” His words were a command filled with love.

I sipped the soothing liquid. I could feel it course its way through my body. The herbs were easily absorbed into my system, and the blood gave me just the right amount of extra energy that I needed to get control of my raging inner self.

Feel better?” His green eyes looked like storm-churned waters with his concern.

Yes. Thank you. I think it was just how overwhelmed I suddenly felt to be home. I'm sorry if I scared you. I'll tell you everything about my trip and the reason for me going there. I'm sure I'll ultimately need your help anyways. But right now, I'd like to go upstairs, take a long warm shower, and then eat dinner.” I told him directly, expecting his objection.

, of course, my love. I know your trip was long. We will talk later.” Dominic's voice drifted after me up the stairs.

What's wrong with you, Emma Hutchinson? I realized that was a good question! Why would I tell Dominic that I would talk to him about everything, and what would I tell him about his sister? The comforting warmth from the shower never eased any of my tension. Instead, my body was twice as tense by the time I got out of the shower. I got dressed in some loose sweats, and went back to the kitchen.

The room was filled with food smells, and I realized that Dom had made me some delicious looking dishes. My mouth began to water, because even though I'm sure I could live off of blood, I love to eat way too much to give it up. I didn't know what any of it was, but I sat down quite happily anyways.

Eat, mia bella.” Dom placed a plate in front of me that had some of everything on it.

Yes, sir!” I saluted him and dug in, the flavors were out of this world.

Dominic ate nothing and didn't mention anything. I felt like he was waiting for me to approach the subject. Once I was full, I helped clean up the kitchen.

How about we have some hot cocoa to go?” I asked.

Where would you like to go, Em?” I wasn't certain of his thoughts or his emotions, and that put me on edge.

I was thinking we could go down to the cove.” I tried to make it sound like a statement, but it felt more like a question.

It's quite dark out still. Perhaps we could go enjoy the veranda in the back?” He sounded amused.

Veranda? What veranda?” I was certain I had explored this huge place from top to bottom.

The newest addition to the house. I had it built while you were away.” He beamed at me.

Of course you did! “Which way?” I asked to him.

Follow me, Milady.” He held out his arm for me to take.

We walked through several of the rooms that were themed. When we came to the beach themed one, I noticed a new set of French doors set into the wall. Dominic smiled encouragingly at me. I rushed forward with curiosity, and pushed them open. The cool salty sea air blew into my face. In the darkness, the rich dark wood looked black, and the sweet blossoms that clung to the overhead trellis were vibrant red. It was a spicy musk that drifted on the air from the blooms. The furniture was a bamboo like wood, stained a darker color, with bright red fluffy cushions. It was like a secret room with the most beautiful view of the sea, and I knew that it would have stellar views of both sunrise and sunset.

It's beautiful!” I squealed in delight.

You like it, mia bella?” Doubt colored his words.

Like it? Ha! I love it!” I hugged him hard around the neck.

I'm glad it pleases you.” He smiled.

Dom, sometimes you're so strange.” I led him over to the chairs and sat down.

What's wrong, Emma Bird? His concern was like a thick fuzzy blanket wrapping around me.

I sighed. I'm not sure where to begin. I confessed.

How about the beginning? He cocked his brow at me and grinned.

Smart ass!” I shoved him.

Ah, but you love me, so what does it matter?” He winked.

It all started with another dream. My first since the one that haunted me for years. I told him everything from my vision, my trip to England, my staying with Betty, Bernie, and even Mike. Mentally I could show him images when I thought it was necessary. By the time I was done, the sun was rising. The sky had turned a beautiful scarlet. I was afraid to look at Dominic because I had withheld information about his sister for so long, and I had intentionally looked for Mike. I was really afraid of how he'd handle it all.

I took a deep steadying breath and looked at him. He was staring at the sea that looked like a flaming liquid. His thoughts were dark- I could tell from the shade of green his eyes had turned- but I didn't think it was directed at me.

Emma, I need to know, how certain is this vision?” His voice was pleading for there to be doubt.

Bettina told me that all visions are possibilities, but if she doesn't change the path she's on right now, this will come to pass.” How could I be the one to tell him that his sister will die? I felt horrible.

Then we must help to change her path.” The finality to his voice startled me.

Eh, Dom? Don't you think I tried contacting her?” I was hurt by the thought that he believed I would just let something happen to Issy, especially since I had emailed her before I left England.

Clearly, it's the fault of this werewolf Jack. He must be removed from the picture.” Darkness surrounded everything that was Dominic at that moment.

Dominic! No! What if that is the whole reason why that vision happens?” I was shocked that he couldn't see the connection.

What?” He blinked at me, like waking from a dream.

The very action of you doing something to try and 'remove' Jack from the picture could put your sister in the very position that is shown in my vision!” Why did I even have to explain this?! My patience was running thin.

Hmm. Well, something must be done.” He was lost once more to these thoughts.

We can contact her, I can try to continue to watch her future, but I'm not very connected to her anymore- it'll be more difficult.” I sighed, stifling a yawn.

The yawn seemed to bring Dom back to the moment, he got up and held out his hand to me.

You must be exhausted. We have to get you ready for school later today, you must rest now.” His smile was forced.

Thank you, Dom, but you have to promise me that you won't do anything without talking to me first, now promise?” I demanded.

I promise, mia bella.” His hand was firm in mine as he escorted me back to my room. “Sleep sweet, my love.” His lips gently brushed my cheek.

I went inside feeling every ounce of my tired body filled with dread of what I had just started. I wasn't sure what he would do without consulting me, or how far this would go, but I knew that it was right to tell him. A small part of my mind was worried over how he allowed the Mike and Bernie issues to pass without any acknowledgment. But it was all something that I would have to worry about tomorrow- because the moment my head touched my pillow the world was gone.

When I woke up I wanted to go back to sleep. The memories from my talk with Dominic washed through my thoughts right away. I cringed as the images I had shown to him played back through my mind like a slide show. This is going to be a long day. I told myself as I got up and headed for the bathroom. I took extra time brushing my teeth and my hair- stalling for time that I didn't have.

By the time I got downstairs, the house was filled with people. I sighed, knowing that this was caused by what I had revealed to Dominic. I went to the kitchen to get a hot cocoa- if I was going to deal with all of this right away then I need some chocolate to get through it- and maybe some blood.

The kitchen was clearly a command central. The moment I stepped inside, some part of my brain started screaming at me to run the other direction. Dom's parents were at a table with my grandparents. I couldn't see Dom, but I knew he was near. I threw blocks around my thoughts, and ones to ensure that I couldn't hear anything that was coming from others. In truth, I was just not ready for this. I walked to the stove and made my spiked cocoa. The sweet taste and strong aroma made my sense more attuned to the chaos around me. There was so much fear in the air that you could taste it. My mouth was sour the moment the feelings reached me. Yuck! I took another sip of my cocoa. I sighed. I didn't want to get involved in this right away, but it appeared I had no choice.

Emma Mary Hutchinson!” My grandmother's voice pierced my thoughts.

I turned to her and took down my mental blocks.

Yes, Grandmother? Good morning Grandpa, and Mr. and Mrs. DeDominico. I walked to the table they were sitting at.

Why did you not respond? Her words were cold and crisp like cracking ice cubes out of the tray.

I didn't hear you. I've learned the art of mental blocking. I'm sorry, Grandmother, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I hated bowing to her harshness, but it was her way.

You what? Why on Earth would you want to do that? I tried not to roll my eyes as she asked.

I think it's an amazing gift. I'm very proud of you, Emma. Grandpa's words were soft and comforting.

Thank you, Grandpa. Could you tell me why everyone is here and all of this is going on? I gestured to the rush of people behind me.

Unfortunately, Emma, we were hoping you could explain more to us. You see, Dominic informed us about the vision you had. The madness you see is a collection of people- both human and vampire- that want to try to stop this event from happening. Grandpa sounded tired.

Here let me show you the dream. Please, everyone join hands. I asked of them.

They looked at each other- apparently this wasn't a common thing in the vampire world- like I cared at this point.

As you say, Child. Grandpa took my grandmother's hand, she tentatively took Dominic's mother's hand, she her husband's. They looked at me expectantly.

Grandpa, I need your hand. I held out my hand for his. His cool fingers slipped into mine without effort. Please stay calm. I warned them as I followed the connection between each of them. Once I was certain I could get the images through to all of them at one time, I took a deep breath. Here is what I've seen. My face blanked as I played the vision for them.

Each vampire at the table gave an audible gasp from the connection. I felt their tension, and unease. But I knew they would hold this position as long as I fed them the information they wanted. I tried to push the images from my mind into theirs, but I watched the scene unfold just as they did. By the end, tears were running down my cheeks.

That's all of it. I said once the images stopped.

Thank you, Emma. Dominic's mom took my hand and squeezed it. I know how hard it must be for you to intentionally watch that.

Thank you, dear, for sharing that with us. Dominic's dad patted my arm. The information should prove to be most useful.

I'm very impressed with your skill, Emma. It seems that your trip has opened new doors for your natural gifts. Grandpa reached up and wiped away the tears.

My grandmother was staring at me. Her eyes were calculating in a way I had never seen before. I think she was seeing me for who I was for the first time. I didn't try to pry into her mind- which I could've done easily. Instead, I pulled a chair up to the table and sipped on my cocoa.

Words buzzed around the table, but I knew that they wouldn't change the future. The entire time I sat there, I was tuning on to this future- looking for the change to come from all of this action and excitement. Nothing changed. I didn't know if I should say something, but I figured that the actions would help Dom's family deal with this possible future. All I wanted to do was find the solution and get all this nonsense out of the house, but it wasn't there. No matter which way I tried to turn this future, I couldn't see the other options or other futures. Nothing is set in stone. I knew I was missing something.

I sensed Dominic before anyone noticed him in the room. I didn't move to join him. I felt my temper close to the surface because he hadn't listened to me. I mean I totally understood why he told his family, but still- I felt betrayed a little.

Em? I knew that he sent the message just to me. I could feel his uncertainty- but it didn't make me feel better.

Yes, Dom? I tried to keep my emotions out of my thoughts.

I'm sorry. Can you, please, join me? He was almost pleading in my head.

Dominic! His parents cried out together.

Yes, Mother, Father. He nodded to each one. I had never seen him so formal with his parents before.

I'll come. I said rising from my seat.

Thank you. His eyes caught mine.

I'm sorry that I have to leave you so soon, but I have to start getting ready for tomorrow. First day, you know. I shrugged at them.

Of course. Dom's mom smiled at me.

Grandpa just waved me on and Grandmother seemed to be lost in her own thoughts.

I walked out of the room and out to the veranda. The outdoors seemed to call to me, especially after going through that kitchen scene with so many people trying to fix something they didn't understand or could do anything about. I sighed into the cool early evening air.

Emma? His voice was concerned.

Dom, I'm going to forgive you. I'm just annoyed.” I hated to play those games where you dance around what you mean.

Thank you. I'm sorry you feel betrayed. I had to tell them.” He looked down at his boots.

You know... what they're doing... it won't help. You know that, right?” I looked at him.

What do you mean? You can see this?” He knelt in front of me.

Yes. No one asks me though. This path leads to that future as well. I can't see a different path to take. But maybe something will change soon. I didn't want to say anything because I wanted them to feel like they were doing something.” I looked out into the purple hued sea, the sound of waves crashing was comforting.

Thank you for telling me. I truly appreciate it, my love.” He sighed and sat next to me.

What's the point of lying to you, I doubt it'll make you feel better. You are going to have to trust me. I'm watching this, looking for options, but right now... it seems like nothing is going to change it.” I had to be honest with him.

I understand.” He huffed out a breath. “So I asked the outfitters to come out in about an hour for your fitting.” He smiled at me.

My what?” I raised my eyebrow at him.

For your uniform.” I watched as he was holding back a snicker.

Uniform? Excuse me, no one mentioned a uniform!” My temper was set to come out, I stood and walked to the rail.

I promise it isn't a terrible one. In fact it's all black. And every student has the ability to add to theirs. But the school needed something that helped to keep people from nosing about too much- thus the private school look, and uniforms.” He was holding his smile back.

UGH!” I exhaled as much as I could.

Apparently, Dominic felt that that was the straw that broke the camel's back because he burst out in laughter.

What the hell do you think is so damn funny, Dominic?” I snarled at him.

You, my dear.” He giggled at me.

Grr!” I went and sat noisily down.

It really isn't so bad. You'll see soon. As for your books, they will have to wait until we get your schedule tomorrow. I've arranged for us to be there a little early so we could get you settled.” He beamed at me, as though it replaced his laughter from earlier.

I remained silent.

Oh, come on, Emma, you can't truly be mad at me for laughing at your silliness.” He nudged me with his arm.

Yes, I can!” I protested.

Okay, fine, sit there and pout. I guess I'll have to eat these tasty calzones all by myself.” He said as he pulled two silver covered plates from behind the outdoor bar.

That is so not fair! Using food when you know I've not eaten yet.” I sighed in mock despair.

You know I would give you the world, mia bella.” He handed me a plate that felt the perfect temperature.

I pulled the lid off and bit into the doughy turnover. My mouth watered as the salty tartness from the green olives and the artichoke hearts blended in my mouth. My favorite! Yummy! I could no longer pretend to be upset.

Thank you!” I smacked a loud wet kiss on his cheek.

You're welcome and that is only slightly gross- less calzone next time.” He smiled as he slid his hand across his cheek.

We ate in silence- just watching the waves roll on the sea as it darkened to a midnight black.

Once the outfitters arrived I was rushed upstairs into an actual fitting room- apparently I had not been in every room. It had mirrors everywhere and a pedestal that I had to stand on. There were drawers on every surface that didn't have a mirror reflecting a different angle of me. There were two women and a man. I didn't understand why I needed three people to dress me until I learned that they each did something different as the others worked on alterations. After two hours of them turning, poking, sticking, stitching, cutting, and hmming around me- they finally finished. In the end, I walked away with two plain black pleaded skirts, a pair of black slacks- much like Dickies, a pair of black capris, two long and two short sleeve button ups, a black knit vest with an emblem of a moon with a bat, and several pairs of knee high stockings. I love black and all, but I seriously thought that someone should've thought the apparel out a little better- this stuff stood out more than street clothes.

How are we supposed to lay low if we're dressed like some sort of gothic reject school?” I asked once the outfitters were gone.

Dom chuckled. “Em, I told you this is the basic, bare minimum. No one wears only black. They mix it up. I've ordered more vests for you, that is one of the things that you do have to wear, but everything else is subjective.” He smiled at me.

I think you have an evil bone in your body- like the monster that Igor makes in that cartoon movie.” I stared at the reflection of myself, clad all in black. This would've been my dream back in my normal life. I hated to have to remind myself that my 'normal' life was long gone.

Of course I do. I'm a vampire, after all.” He smiled and kissed me.

I love you, Dom.” I replied.

And I, you.” His breath was warm on my neck.

The rest of the evening was spent trying to get me ready for the next day. I was frightened to go to a vampire school. What if I was different and no one liked me? I know, it was a stupid fear, but these were supposed to be my people- the ones I might die for- and I really wanted them to like me. I got out my messenger bag that I used in high school- it would serve me well again. I pulled out some blood red fishnets, my black combat boots, one of the black skirts, the vest, and my favorite tee- cautioning those around me that I bite, even if they couldn't read it. I packed up some paper and pens, but left the rest of my bag empty except for my wallet. The night seemed to fly by, and soon I was back in my bed for the night. I stared at the ceiling until the blackness took me.

When the alarm went off at seven in the morning, I knew I hadn't set it. The annoying beeping bounced off the stone walls of my room, making my ears ring like bats in a belfry. Why is that on? My desperate attempt to turn it off was useless- especially when I ended up toppling out of my bed. The soft fuzzy texture of my fluffy rug tickled my face.

Ugh! Damn you, stupid alarm clock! Turn off!” I was just reaching for my boot when my door opened.

Good, it woke you.” Dom came in full of smiles, sunshine, a cup of coffee, and didn't ask why I was crawling on the floor holding my shoe.

You! You set that beast of a machine!” I snarled at his cheeriness.

Si, cara mia. Today we go early to school, remember?” He looked at me quizzically.

It's a vampire school, isn't it at night?” I pleaded.

Emma, you know we're not like Dracula. We live in the human world. Besides, most classes don't start until at least noon.” He smiled.

But!” That was my best protest.

He handed me the coffee, pointed to my clothes, and left.

Grr!” I shouted at the closed door.

I grabbed my clothes and headed into the bathroom. I took a quick shower- longing to just relax in the perfect water. My clothes felt new, like I was trying on a new me. Even though I would've bought something similar to this, it still felt foreign. I brushed my straight hair and expertly pulled it into two braids that fell on either side of my head. I lightly did my normal black eyeliner. The red shimmer eyeshadow was a bit dramatic for the first day, but I figured I couldn't tone down all of me. I briefly wondered if everyone walked around with their fangs elongated all the time at school as I applied the deep red gloss.

Once I was put together, I slipped my messenger bag over my shoulder. I checked to make sure my little bat pin was still attached before I headed downstairs.

Dom looked very handsome, and seriously toned down. His usually spiked hair was gelled back. He wore black slacks, a heather gray version of my vest, and a crimson button-up. I couldn't see one tattoo. I did notice that he wore bright red chucks.

I giggled as he held the door for me.

What?” He looked at me.

Nothing. Why is your vest gray?” I changed the subject.

It's what separates the students from the faculty. Although I'm the youngest professor there- I don't look the youngest.” He smiled at me and I felt my cheeks pinken.

So, am I your student?” The question had been burning inside me since I found out he'd be teaching there.

Probably not, mia bella. I think I get the older students only. I don't think they'd let me teach you anyways- you know, with favoritism and all. But once you're settled with your classes, and you still want to learn from my travels, I'll teach you.” He closed the door behind him.

Yes! Of course!” I nearly shouted at the top of my lungs, but managed to tone it down.

We will see.” He gestured for me to turn, I did.

Parked right in front of the house was my beautiful new black Jeep Wrangler with green flames- my second black beauty. I still missed my first one, but the accident on the bridge that had completed my change into a vampire, had taken my beautiful car along with my favorite black furry slippers. I ran to the car that I hadn't seen since I packed it up for travel.

When did it get here?” I asked as soon as I touched it.

While you were gone. I put the boxes inside the closet across from your room.” His eyes twinkled at my happiness over my beloved car.

With everything that has been happening, I forgot all about this. It was supposed to arrive right after I did.” The memory made me grumpy at how late it was.

Things sometimes take longer than expected in international travel, love.” He tried to calm me.

That's stupid. But I'm glad it's here.” I lovingly stroked my car.

So, shall we head out then?” He pulled a black newsboy hat down on his head.

Yes, sir.” I laughed as I saluted him.

The top was off and the cool sea air felt fresh against my skin. Dom sat with his eyes closed as he hummed along to the Portishead CD I was playing. The morning was overcast, the sun was playing peek-a-boo behind the clouds. As we drove, I got to see more of the small towns that I loved with their terracotta tile roofs. The further spread out the homes were, the closer we got to the school. Many of them looked similar to my grandparents' villa.

Once we passed through the very large impressive cast-iron gates with the word cognizione- knowledge, above them, I knew there was no turning back.

We are almost there. Just follow the road up to the main building. Someone there will take the car from us.” He said with his eyes still shut.

I did as I was told. The road curved through a good deal of woods- or was it a forest? At the end of a long looping driveway stood a huge castle. It easily topped Hogwarts in my mind. The most amazing part was how well preserved it looked. It had several keeps, three towers, a moat and drawbridge, and a bailey. I mean, it was something that could've easily been here since its original use, which had to be a thousand years ago. The stones were a cool gray, and the slightest green moss clung to the lower stones that touched the surrounding grass before it dropped off into the moat.

I wonder if there are gators or something scary in it? I inched toward the moat.

Absolutely nothing.” Dom laughed at me.

Curiosity. So now what?” I turned to him.

Now we go to the office and get your schedule. I'll show you around for a bit, then I'm off because I've a class to teach at noon. Oh, which reminds me, your professors are to be called 'Master' or 'Mistress'. Nothing else, okay?” His tone was so serious.

Ok, Master Dominic.” I stuck my tongue out at him.

Actually, I'd be Master DeDominico.” He winked.

Anything else? What happens if you or I finish before the other?” I was afraid to be completely alone with nothing to do.

I think you'll figure everything out as you go. If that happens, I've a course to outline and lessons to plan, and you'll make friends.” His smile was encouraging, but I was still so frightened.

Ok, do we talk only in our minds here? Should I take my bag?” I asked as we climbed out of the car.

It depends on the class. The instructors will inform you. When you're walking around, we speak aloud- less strange that way. Yes, you should take your bag. Although once you learn your way, you'll be able to find your car, but until then I think that you should keep it with you. On we go.” He took my hand.

The well worn wood of the drawbridge was beautiful. Our feet made muffled thuds as we crossed under the defense line. I was worried that things might be dropped down from the holes above, like in the old movies. Once inside the courtyard, Dominic escorted me to the office which was the first door on the right. Inside you would've never guessed it was inside a castle. The walls were white- except for the brightly colored notices that were scattered throughout. The women sitting at the various desks behind the tall counter looked like they could be in any high school.

Ah, Master DeDominico, I'm glad you came in this morning. Here's your newest student list, the contents of your inbox, and an invitation to the first faculty dinner.” The cheery redhead with dreamy eyes for Dom, handed him a pile of papers.

Eh, does she not realize how obvious she is? I had put up my blocks the moment I walked into the office, so I sent Dom a private message.

I doubt it, mia bella. His words were humored.

Miss Taraneh, this is Emma Mary Hutchinson, my betrothed. She's starting classes and there were last minute changes to her schedule. We are here to pick up a copy of it now.” His smile was formal.

Oh, um, let me get that for you, Master DeDominico.” She flushed a deep red as she scooted off toward her computer.

Was that necessary? Look how she reacted. I felt for the woman.

She's a human, Emma. She is in fact a secretary here. I can't have her thinking that there is any chance. Although we don't look down on human-vampire relationships, we don't allow them on school grounds. Too many questions could be raised. I had to make things perfectly clear that I was taken. The words were so cold and formal that I felt like I was receiving a lecture for doing something.

Okay! Jeeze! I sent him.

I'm sorry, cara mia, this place sends me into teacher mode. He was apologetic.

Here we go, Miss Hutchinson. Such advanced classes for a fresh student? Congratulations, or good luck.” Taraneh smiled, but I could see the female predatory eyes glint at me over Dominic.

Thank you, Miss Taraneh. I do hope you have a nice day.” I smiled as sweetly as I could, took Dom's hand and pulled him out the door.

Can you say territorial much? Dominic laughed.

Did you not see her eyes? My anger flared into my thoughts.

Anyways, what classes are you in, my love? There should be 4 to 6.” He changed the subject on me.

Um, Advanced Healing 4, Mental Training 4, History of Our People 1, Learning Our Ways 1, Tracking 1. Bloody hell! They are everyday! What is tracking?” I felt grumpy.

Wow, that's some list. Well, tracking is one of our vampire skills- we can track people. The other two level one classes are basic entry classes. One is to teach you about the people that you come from, and the other is meant to help you learn about your own gifts and skills as a vampire- something you should know. Perhaps you had to take that class. And you have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off, my love.” He patted my arm.

That just means that instead of suffering through one class a day, one day I suffer through two!” I whined.

I think you'll enjoy your classes. And in fact, you have each class each day- much like high school.” Dom was suddenly interested in his shoes.

What!” I moaned.

It isn't so bad. At least you know that we both have the same amount of days here.” I could tell he was grasping for something positive.

I took a deep breath and let it out.

It won't be as bad as you think, I promise.” He held my hand tightly.

So let's see this place before I've to go to a class that I doubt I belong in because of how advanced it is.” I sighed.

Okay, well this is obviously a castle. It's the main building, it houses the main classes. So your level one and level two classes will probably be here for the most basic courses, sometimes there are more advanced ones here. Your healing class will be held out in the greenhouses, which are in the gardens- they're out back, can't miss them. Your mental class will be held out in the empty field. Everything around the building has been removed, kind of strange if you ask me. And your tracking class will be held in those woods we passed coming in. There is a hunters' lodge out there. I'll show it all to you, but we must move quickly.” He walked us out the back of the castle and over another bridge.

We walked faster than a human's quick walk, he showed me the hunters' lodge first. It looked just like I imagined it would- all wood, lots of angles, and dead things attached to it. I hated it. Next we moved onto the empty field and plain beige circle building. There was one door and many windows just below the flat roof. It seemed really strange. The garden was beautiful, mapped out with flowers and plants of a huge variety. The greenhouse was a huge building of well crafted blue glass. I wanted to go inside, but Dominic wanted to make sure that I ended up in the castle.

Wow! This place is really, um, interesting. Structurally, at least.” I smiled.

I love it.” His eyes were lost in a distant thought.

Dominic!” A male voice called out to him, I turned to it.

Excuse me?” Dom's voice became steal.

Oh, bollocks, it's Master DeDominico now, right mate?” The guy had an Australian accent.

Hey, Leland! Man, how long has it been?” Dom hugged a tall tan guy, that couldn't be much older than us.

Isn't it supposed to be Mr. Williams or something snobbish like that? Aye, it's been a while.” He punched Dom in the shoulder.

Too long, my friend.” The smile on Dom's face was huge.

Hi! I'm Emma Hutchinson, Dominic's fiancée. And you are?” I held out my hand.

Mate, you are forgetting your manners. I'm Leland Beau Aldridge the first.” He bowed to me before he took my hand and kissed it.

Eh, it's nice to meet you, Leland.” I blushed nervously at him.

Don't worry, darl, I won't bite ya. Your beau would kick me arse.” He laughed.

Look, bud. My name is Emma.” I huffed. He was ruffling my feathers.

Ah, Emma, mia bella. This is Leland. One of my best buddies. I grew up with him and his parents, Beau and Kylie- good vampire family. I spent some time with them in their homeland of Australia. It's actually where I got one of my tats. Oh, crud! I've got to go, my love, I've a class to teach. I'll see you later.” He kissed me briefly and then ran off at light speed.

Wonderful!” I grumbled.

Don't worry your sweet face. I'll keep you company.” Leland said and he offered me his arm.

I was tempted to ignore him and run off to my class, but I had a few hours to kill. So I took it.

So, Leland, tell me about yourself.” I wanted to know more about this vampire that was so suddenly in my life.

Well, I'm from a traditional vampire family- only I knew about vampires from the beginning. We are always surrounded by the vampire culture, it would've been foolish for my folks to try and hide it. So, I knew from the get go what I would be. My family has been around for a long time. Um, they've a horse rescue. I'm 20, although like you my aging has slowed down. I was born in Newcastle in New South Wales. I like long walks on the beach, sunsets, sweet blood, and bold girls that try to pump people for information.” He winked his hazel green eyes at me.

Well then... I guess we're going to be great friends.” I felt drawn to his charismatic personality.

Now, how about you tell me something about yourself, short stuff.” His words were more like a command, but done in a way that I couldn't resist.

Let me guess, you're a skilled compeller?” I understood the feeling at once.

Perhaps. I'll tell you mine, if you tell me yours.” He was addicting.

I'm a healer, a psychic, and I've mental abilities that I don't know the right word for. Your turn, Aussie.” I felt like I was suddenly in a peeing contest.

Wow, quite a gifted one you're. Well, darl, I can compel, but it's more of a natural thing. I'm a healer as well. But I'm an excellent tracker- so much that I get to teach the intro class this year.” He beamed at his own excellence.

Does that mean I'm going to have to call you Master Aldridge?” I dreaded this thought.

Nah. I like Leland. But if you want make a sweet pet name for me, feel free. Special permission given to you for that.” He was such a flirt.

For now, I'll just stick with Leland. What level are you at healing?” I was hoping that he would actually be part of one of my classes.

I'm in as advanced as you can get here without specializing, level four. Why, trying to see where you might end up?” Usually being teased bugged me, but his words felt like coming home to a close friend.

Actually, I was wondering if you would be in another class with me. You see, this is my first go around here and I didn't want to be completely alone. And I'm in Advanced Healing 4.” I proclaimed with all the pleasure of watching his smug face drop.

Wait just a second here, missy. You are just starting this semester and you were placed in the level four class? How is that even possible, what other classes do you have, ya bugga?” He looked at me with suspicion.

Excuse me? Did you just call me a 'bugga'?” I was flabbergasted.

Oh, sorry, mate, it's a term of endearment back home.” Leland looked sheepishly up from his dark blonde shaggy hair.

Right. Well I've Healing 4, Mental Training 4, Tracking 1, History of Our People 1, and something about learning our ways one or something.”

Wow, that's bonzer! You're like a conch?” His words were lost to me.

What?” I felt like an idiot for asking.

Sorry. I know, the slang is different. Bonzer is like great, and conch is a bloke that would rather work than play.” His forehead pinched together as he tried to define his Australian slang for me.

No, I'm not a conch. I'm just naturally gifted... And do try to remember I'm a Yank, so some things will be lost on me.” I smiled.

You're a seppo? Wow, never would've guessed it. You seem like you could be from anywhere given the right lingo and accent. So, should we stroll over to the gardens?” He looked me in the eyes and I felt absolutely comfortable with him, it was like my fears just melted away.

The healing class began at two in the afternoon and lasted an hour. Leland and I sat outside until we needed to go in. When I entered the large glass room I was taken aback by the amount of space that was available. And the blue tint to the glass, made the room feel like being underwater. In the middle of the room, everything was cleared away and throw pillows were placed. Along each wall, tables were setup for what I assumed to be potion making. I sat next to Leland. The woman standing at the front of the room was a thin wiry woman. Her hair was a soft brown with ringlet curls- clearly from the natural humidity in the room. She was easily five foot seven, but instead of being imposing, she was very down-to-earth. Her brown eyes were very kind. Before she began the class, she called me to the front.

Welcome, Emma Hutchinson. I'm Mistress Fleur, but please call me Lily unless you see someone official come in the room. I realize that you have some extraordinary abilities for healing and mental control. I also understand that most of the people in this room have been together since the beginning. Please feel free to jot down anything that you're not familiar with as we go and later we can work on it together.” Lily's words were softened by her French accent.

Thank you, Lily. I hope to be able to follow along. I don't know much of learned healing, perhaps they should've put me in a lower level class. But I do know that I can heal my own way.” I smiled at her.

Perhaps today after class, if you have time, we can discuss your special talent?” Lily's voice was like soft rose petals floating on a spring wind.

I think I have some time before my mental training class.” I nodded.

Good, now please sit and just try to relax and get your bearings.” She dismissed me.

Thank you.” I went and sat back down next to Leland.

I sat and watched as everyone in the class followed exactly what Lily had to say. I, on the other hand, was lost. I didn't understand why they had to go through all of these exercises and use creams to heal small wounds. It seemed as though everything that they took extra time to do, I could do within seconds. After about forty-five minutes, I decided that I definitely did things differently. I was seriously curious as to whether or not these vampires could heal death or the dying.

Excuse me, Lily?” I raised my voice over the sounds of people packing up for the day.

Yes, Emma?” Lily's voice was soothing like menthol to congestion.

I was wondering if these healing practices had any effect on healing the dying or curing death?” The room became silent.

Um, death is something that we don't control. It can't be healed. Why do you ask?” Although her skin had visibly blanched, I could read the curiosity in her eyes.

Do I say anything? “I've heard of people bringing freshly dead animals back to life.” I hoped that I didn't give anything away.

That would truly be a miracle, Emma. I've, in all my hundreds of years, have never heard of or seen another vampire with such abilities.” Her eyes searched the very depths of my soul.

Oh, okay. Never mind then.” I looked down at the ground, my face felt hot, and I could tell many of my classmates were staring at me.

Once you're packed up and things are put away you're welcome to leave.” Lily announced to the classroom.

I desperately wanted to bolt from the room.

Hey, Em, I'll see you over in Mental Training.” Leland said with a wink as he left the room.

How did he? Oh I told him. I was nervous about having to talk about what I could do with my own healing powers.

Emma?” Lily's voice broke through my internal rant of nerves.

Yes, Lily.” I tried to smile.

Please, come and sit with me.” Lily's presence was relaxing like sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, but I was still terrified that I was a freak- I went and sat across from her.

I feel that your question was brought on from personal experience and not just a curious mind. How about you tell me what you can do, and we'll figure out how to place you. Okay?” She smiled at me.

Well, I know that I can bring things back from the dead- at least things that are just dead- nothing rotting.. or at least I hope not. That would be gross. I can heal others when I direct my energy to their injuries. And I can cure fatal wounds. That's about it. But I don't use anything other than my own energy. I didn't know there was another way to do it.” I stared down at the table between us.

Mon Dieu, that is quite amazing. This class is meant to teach people to cure injuries, nothing fatal, but relatively bad ones. We use all things necessary to get the results we want. I've never met a vampire that can utilize their energy in such a manner. Do you think you could show me?” Her face was lit with excitement.

Um, are you injured somewhere?” My nerves tripled.

Not yet, but a small injury I could heal quickly myself, I'd like to see you heal something larger. Nothing fatal. Could you do this for me?”Lily was holding a large knife, my stomach dropped to my knees.

Mistress Fleur, are you sure?” I was really scared. What happens if I fail?

Yes, Emma, I'll make a gash that would take me hours to heal, but you'll heal it. D'accord?” She nodded as she asked.

Yes, Lily.” I responded automatically.

I watched in weird terror as my new professor took the wicked looking knife in her hand and slashed a huge wound on her left forearm. The blood sprayed out, and then flowed down her arm in a steady stream. My fangs dropped into place from the scent of pure vampire blood.

Now, heal it, if you would Emma.” She was transfixed by my every movement.

I placed a towel over the wound to stop me from becoming more distracted by the blood. I held the injury as tightly as I could and closed my eyes. I quickly went into a calm state. I sent out my energy to the wound. It was easier to handle through my mind's eye. Within a minute I had all the damage undone. I took the towel off and handed it to Lily. She looked from her arm to me with sheer amazement.

Emma, I just don't know what to say. Are you sure you can do everything that you've said?” Lily was examining her unscathed arm as she asked me the question.

Yes, Lily. I can.” I said point blank.

Perhaps we can bring in another healer, and set up private lessons for you at the same time. What do you think of that? In the meantime, I would like you to try and teach some of your skill to the class, so I'll give you twenty minutes each day to try and guide the students in this form of healing. Okay?” I followed Lily's movements as she stroked the spot where she had sliced straight through to the bone.

If you think they can learn this, then I would be honored. But, I have to go now.” I checked my watch.

Oh, yes, of course. I'm sorry to have kept you so long. Have a good day, Emma.” She briefly looked up, but basically waved me off.

I left the room as quickly as I could. I didn't know how to react to that. Will my entire day be like this? I was already exhausted from being different. Ugh! I rushed over to the strange empty field. It took me a minute to locate the door because it was painted the same color as the rest of the beige building. I was reluctant to step into it, because the color reminded me so much of my high school and my normal life.

Leave the past behind you, Emma Hutchinson. A strong male presence entered my mind.

I knew I had let down my blocks momentarily from everything that had happened and thinking about the old days, but they were still very strong.

Who would dare to enter my thoughts? I forced my mind to follow the pattern that was left with the words. I soon realized that the professor was standing in front of me, once again I saw the look of amazement as I had traced his words back to him.

Ah, you must be the famous Emma Hutchinson. In this room we only use our internal voices, unless there is a visitor. So if you could please lower your ever impressive shielding I would appreciate it.” A tall man with short strawberry blonde hair and light green eyes spoke to me.

Sorry, Master. I didn't know. I apologized.

Please, I'm just Daniel. After class I think we will need to talk. I have a feeling that this isn't the first time today for you though. His smile was cockeyed and full of laughter.

That would be fine, Daniel, and no, it is not the first time. I sighed.

Okay class, this is your new classmate, welcome Emma Hutchinson. His voice was booming and rich with an Irish accent.

Before my thoughts could be bombarded with all the voices from the room, I threw a shield up to filter them through one at a time. Once again Daniel looked at me in interest. I shrugged.

Thank you all for the kind welcome. I allowed my singular thought to flow to each mind in the room, the students reacted in the same manner as Daniel did- shock. I sighed.

Now to begin class. What number am I thinking of? Daniel laughed to himself.

Right, Daniel. What kind of question is that to start the class off with? Leland's voice was like a shrug.

It is to test your ability to read another's thoughts. Any ideas? He asked as he stood on his chair trying to sit in the middle of his desk cross legged.

One. A girl with fair blonde hair answered.

Nope. Daniel stretched his arms above his head.

Twenty-three. Leland guessed with a shrug.

Try again. This time he leaned forward and laid his stomach against his legs, I wasn't sure what he was doing.

The guessing went on for about fifteen minutes before I raised my hand, knowing that I was about to show off.

In this room, you don't have to raise your hand. Feel free to shout out like Leland just did. But, yes, Emma, please go on. Daniel sat up and slid over to the corner of his desk- a plain wooden table with a chair tucked under it, much like ours.

You were not thinking of a number, at least not superficially. In fact the only numbers that were present in your mind at the moment of your question were that of your birth date... but the year is missing. I tilted my head in question.

WOW! Daniel's mouth hung slightly open.

So I must ask, what was the point of asking the question? I hated questions that weren't supposed to be answered.

The purpose, my dear, was to show that they were not trying to actually read my mind. What you did went way beyond anything you'll learn here. Daniel smiled.

I sighed. I didn't understand why I was here if I knew more than my professors.

We'll talk later. If you wouldn't mind allowing some of the others to try... I know it's hard when you know the answers. Daniel sent a silent message to me, I merely nodded in response.

I sat in dull silence as I watched Daniel sit in various silly positions around the room and on various objects, trying to get the students around me to probe his mind and their classmates'. Whenever he asked them to try to find out something about someone in the class, I could feel the mental pings as they tried to get through my blocks. It was interesting to feel how hard they tried with me, versus how they acted in the class. I knew that Leland would try the hardest. The first time he tried I launched a mild shock back through the connection. I thought this would discourage him from trying me, but it seemed to do the opposite. So I spent the rest of the class sending slightly stronger surges through the link and mentally giggling as Leland jolted in his seat. By the end of the class, I was sure I had damaged our friendship, but he seemed right as rain.

See you in Tracking, Em.” He laughed as he left the room, I wasn't sure if I should worry or not- I knew I could defend myself if need be.

Ah, that was quite amusing to watch, Miss Emma. Daniel laughed out loud.

Sorry, sir, I thought the first time would get him to stop, but it only encouraged him. I suppose I could've ignored him. It was strange talking to my teachers so honestly.

It's good for him. I've never seen a class work so hard as a collective. You were a good addition to it, I believe. I've no intention on testing your abilities like a lab rat. I can see that you're more advanced than this class... however, this is as high as it goes. What I can suggest is that I keep you in here as a teaching assistant. I think keeping you here would help the students, especially if you continue to randomly show advanced things around them. What do you say? He was so sure, and then he got down on a yoga mat against the wall and did a headstand.

I, um, think that would be fine. I don't mind being the sideshow freak. What are you doing, if you don't mind me asking? I couldn't resist.

Yoga, my dear. It helps to keep the mind and body in balance. Something a mental training professor must do. But truth be told, I don't think I'm completely balanced. Daniel winked his sea foam green eye at me.

Interesting. Okay, well I have to get to my next class, I'll see you tomorrow. Bye. I hurried out of the room after he waved bye to me with his bare foot.

Going to my next two classes was the most normal thing did I all day. They seemed almost regular. The one was a history class about vampires. The other was like home economics or something. I never thought I would be in a class that taught you how to be a vampire. I think I should've been placed in a higher level class, but I guess it was necessary since I was a new student.

By the time I got to Tracking, I was relatively bored with the whole 'vampire' school thing. It seemed just like high school only worse because now I was stuck helping to teach stuff to other vampires. How is that even fair? I wasn't sure what Tracking would bring, but I was sure it wouldn't be more amazing than the rest of the day.

The woods were dark at this hour. The sounds of the night were echoing all around me as I walked into the tree line. I knew that the jagged branches and strange sounds that go bump in the night would scare a normal person, but as I strolled further into the woods I felt completely calm and welcomed. A tall lurking shadow emerged from the darkness- it was the hunting lodge. It seemed like I was the first here, there wasn't even a light on. In the back of the building, I found a group of other students standing together, looking a bit spooked.

You know, in horror movies, when people cluster together in the dark woods, one is certain to die.” I couldn't resist it.

The small group broke into smaller groups of twos or threes.

Jeeze, you guys, it shouldn't be so easy to spook vampires!” I laughed.

A low growl came directly from behind me. Everyone looked in my direction. I slowly turned toward the noise. The growl came again. It sounded feline. Once I had a lock on the sound, it didn't take long before I saw the glowing green eyes- they seemed out of place on the black panther face staring at me. I wasn't even afraid, like any normal person would've been. Instead I felt my body take a defensive stance. I was not going to back down from a panther in the back woods of Italy and leave these kids to get eaten. I sank down into a low crouch. A rough growl escaped from me. I watched as the other kids either moved toward the lodge for cover, or moved to flank me.

The panther launched itself at me. I was about to do the same when the beast slowly began to transform in mid leap. I was shocked when Leland landed on me completely nude- knocking me to the ground. He placed his fangs against my throat.

You could be dead right now, Emma.” He purred into my ear.

What the devil did you just do?” I demanded.

Class, I'm your professor for Tracking. Your first lesson is to not be taken back by the unusual. Emma's initial reaction to stand and fight was natural. However, she shouldn't have stopped her attack because the threat changed. I'm Leland by the way.” His fangs glistened in the brief moonlight.

It took everything in my power not to throw the full force of my body weight at him. I didn't want to be his damned example. And why the hell is he naked? My temper was beginning to flare.

Now, if everyone could follow me inside, we will start our class.” He shook his head and some leaves fell to the floor.

We marched inside after his nude arse. My mind was circling on the fact that no one had commented on his nudity.

Um, excuse me, Leland? Why are you naked?” I just couldn't stop myself.

For the same reason you'll be soon enough.” He winked at me.

What?” There was a collective grumble.

Calm your grundies down. Tonight we will be doing our first tries at transformation. Every vampire has the ability to change into a predatory creature. Some never learn this skill. You are among the few that have been selected for some reason or another to try and master it. I'm here to teach you. When you transform, the best way to do it's in the nuddy- or naked. Your clothes will tear off you otherwise. So we will have to learn some self esteem and not worry if someone is checking out some body part or not. Aye?” Leland was pulling out robes that looked like they were made of tissue.

These you can wear in the beginning, but you'll only have them going into the change... coming out you'll be as nude as the day you were born.” A smile played at his lips.

He handed out the thin white tissue like cover ups.

Now, after everyone has changed, please meet me outside.” He left the room still naked.

I looked down at the thin material, I knew it wouldn't cover much. So I decided that I might as well start getting used to it. I stripped out of my clothes- taking care not to rip my fishnets. I piled it all nicely together and laid the robe on top of it all. I walked out of the lodge skyclad with my head held high. I knew that as I left several of the males in the group stared openly at me. I will not blush or look ashamed. I would conquer this just as I had conquered everything else.

Ah, cara mia. You've decided to try it in the buff.” Leland's words were sensual.

Yes.” I was trying hard to concentrate on why I was standing outside at night naked, and not on the fact that I was, and why Leland's use of Italian didn't surprise me.

The rest of the class wandered out covered in their tissue sheets- like you couldn't see through them. We lined up across from Leland and waited while he made sure that the surroundings around were clear. Apparently, the first transformation could be quite painful and loud.

When Leland reappeared, his face was lit with excitement. “Tonight, you'll all begin the process of mastering the ability to change on command. Like I can”. He changed into the black panther we had encountered earlier, and just as easily switched back.

Now, I'm going to start guiding you on your journey. No one is allowed to start laughing, as I know it sounds bloody stupid.” Leland laughed.

I tried hard to suppress the giggle that started to form. It came out as a snort. Leland looked at me, but didn't comment.

I want you all to close your eyes. I want you to find the inner predator. You'll hear its call in the deepest, darkest parts of your very soul.” His sudden silence left us to just listen to our inner beasts.

I sat with my eyes shut. The wind blew my braids back from my bare chest. I felt as though my skin was bristling. I heard a wolf howl, low and primal. My eyes shot open. Leland was watching me with interest. I listened hard to the dark woods around me. I inhaled the deep scents of trees, and night. But I couldn't sense a wolf anywhere. I closed my eyes again. I went back to searching for the beast within. I heard the howl again, as though the creature was standing right in front of me. Instead of opening my eyes, I followed the sound deeper within my mind, and that's where I found her. Her thick black fur was as dark as midnight. Her eyes, the same shade as my own, were bright with intelligence and excitement. I walked toward her with my hand extended. She stepped to match my own footing. Her mouth with all its beautiful white canines was in a wolfish grin.

You're my predator. I said to her, she yipped in response.

I reached out and pet her soft pelt- that was when my body began to shake. I felt her begin to take control. I fell forward in a howl of pain. My body contorted to her response. The thick soft black fur that began to sprout all over my body was like having needles sown through your pores. My leg joints bent backwards with a loud crack. My hands shrank back into paws with razor sharp claws attached. A tail grew from my tail bone- it was as if my body was producing new bones.

My entire body got smaller with each new change to my extremities.

When I finally opened my eyes, I was panting hard and a wolf. My senses were heightened. I wanted to run. A howl that escaped from my body seemed to stretch from the tip of my tail to the points of my ears. I didn't understand the thoughts circling through my mind. I knew that the people around me were familiar, but their faces were distorted with fear. I know no one with such fear. I looked out towards the woods. Yes, freedom. I inched toward the trees that were on my right. A blonde male human stepped in front of me. His face was stuck in my thoughts like I knew him. He emitted no fear when he stood in front of me- blocking my path from what I wanted.

I growled.

Emma?” His word was touched with a place I knew as Australia. What is Australia?

I stepped back.

Emma, fight the beast and get control again.” The command was clear.

I'm not to be controlled. I'm Alpha in my world. I snarled.

He stepped back. Emma Hutchinson, you're a vampire not a wolf.

Images flashed through my mind, I shook to try to get them out.

The strange male sent more thoughts to me.

Instead of succumbing to the thoughts, I braced myself for my leap.

The images continued to flood towards me, so many feelings were mixed in. Weak human.

I felt each of my muscles lock into place, and then I sprung with my teeth bared.

The human fell to the floor, covering his head.

I heard him shout to the others standing there, “Class dismissed, could someone please go and tell Master DeDominico about this,” it sounded as if another animal was trapped, but I couldn't risk going back for it.

I ran. The wind ruffled the fur in my ears, and filled my nostrils with all the surrounding scents. I picked up the odor of a large cat, but something was wrong about it. I stayed far from it. Now was not the time for curiosity. The soft pads of my feet made no noise as I ran through the trees and underbrush.

I heard the word 'Emma' shouted again somewhere in the distance from me. I ran faster. I would not be caught by these creatures in my pursuit was all I knew.

I ran until the sun was up, and my body was exhausted. The trees had thickened around me. I found a low-lying cave of sorts. The air around it smelled stale, a clear sign that it had not been used in a great many moons. I crawled into its mouth, the floor was soft from all the small leaves and debris that littered the floor. I found the deepest spot I could fit into and curled into a tight ball. My breathing slowed and soon the exhaustion from my flight caught up to me. Sleep claimed me.

I blinked one eye open and then the other. My entire body ached. I was in a dark place, and it smelled of the Earth and soil. I closed my eyes again. When I opened them back up I was fighting to see where I was. I reached my hand out and felt cold stone. What the hell? I began to panic. Both my hands made contact with rough rocks as I pushed them out to try to find my way out. A small opening just to the right of my head had me breathe a sigh of relief. I tried to roll over to my belly when I noticed two things. The first was that the space was so small I couldn't turn over, and the second was that I was naked. How the bloody heck did I end up here and like this? I didn't have time to think about this. I wanted out of this tiny space. I wiggled as best I could on my back out of the hole.

The ground scraped against my skin. I knew I would have some serious deep cuts when I finally got out. After squirming for what felt like forever, I was inside a larger- but still low- cave. My back felt instant relief as I rolled over to my belly. I army crawled out of its mouth, just to bump into a giant black cat. Oh, crap. Is that a panther? My mind was racing. I must have woken it because it stretched and then looked at me.

I was suddenly standing face to face with a very nude Leland.

Um, excuse me? But when the bloody-freaking-aye did I fall into the damn twilight zone?!” I shouted at him.

I see you don't remember. Not surprising. You are the first person I ever met that has been able to fully morph into their predator on the first try. I never thought... then again that was probably my mistake. I mean, it's you, isn't it?” He looked at me in amazement.

What the fuck are you talking about?” I lost it.

Emma, do you remember going to Tracking class yesterday?” His eyes were bright.

Eh, yeah. I went and you were talking about something about connecting with one's inner animal or something. Why am I out here naked?” My head was beginning to throb.

You changed! Emma, you frigging turned into a beautiful black wolf. I tried to get you back but you got past me and took off. I had to follow you. I've been out here making sure you were okay all day. I had a student tell Dominic about this. I had to make sure you were safe. But, oh my god! You frigging became a damn wolf. No one has EVER become a wolf. You truly are unique.” He was bouncing on his toes from the excitement.

What do you mean, no has ever turned into a wolf?” I was seriously wondering if I was a damaged vampire.

In the history of vampires, since we learned to morph into our internal predator- there has never been one that could take the shape of our natural enemy!” Leland's voice was thick with his accent as he shouted his news at me.

Great, you think I'm going to go and enlist in some sort of anti-wolf campaign? Yeah, right! My best friend happens to be a werewolf, you git!” My temper was near the surface and I could feel my skin prickle, the wolf inside me was stirring again.

Do you not understand how important you are? You could be the blooming difference between us being hunted down and murdered or our survival!” He was in my face now, his hazel eyes were filled with excitement.

So not interested. I'll not out my best friend. You are S-O-L if you think I would.” My muscles were tense I wanted to run and get away from this guy.

Emma.” He took my hand I wanted to pull it back instantly. “I'm not asking you to go against your best friend. I'm merely pointing out the fact that you, darl, are the only vampire that can go near the werewolves when they're in pack form and fit in. You are the piece that links both worlds.” He crooned at me.

Leland, let go of my hand before you lose your own. I'm going now.” It was a simple statement, but it was the truth, and after I said it I shifted back to my wolf form and ran.

Who the hell does he think he is? We need to strike a balance, my dear internal predator. You can't just take me over, we have to share. I felt ridiculous talking to myself, but I knew she could hear me. There was a soft growl in response.

I don't want to do anything that would create more problems within the two communities. So it looks like this wolf shifting thing will have to be mastered completely and then we can reach an agreement as to what's okay. The air rushed by as I let her control my body. I knew she'd take me back to where I needed to be.

Dominic. The name came from her, and I knew she caught his scent. It was like cold water in my veins, she allowed me partially back into my body. I could smell him. I ran towards him.

Dominic put his hands up in defense and took a low crouching position. “Whoa, there doggie. I'm not going to hurt you.”

Dominic. I called out mentally to him.

Emma?” His eyes widened in shock. “So it's true.”

Yes. I answered him. I need to shift back now. I spoke to my wolf self, and she released the control she had over my body- I willed myself back into human form.

Um, you're a bit nude there, love.” He shrugged out of the coat he had on.

Yeah, apparently it's better than shredding your clothes. I thought you would've brought mine with you.” His eyes continued to size me up, my nudity was not the issue at hand.

The student that came to tell me what happened, mia bella, didn't say you would be naked. I was told you changed and took off and Leland had to go after you.” Concern filled his eyes.

Yes, I changed. And now I'm freezing and I think your friend is an idiot.” I said as I began to march back in the direction as to what I hoped was the school.

There's a car not far from here. I'm sure we can discuss how Leland handled this later, let's just get you home.” He wrapped his warm arm around me and walked me to the borrowed school car.

When we got back to the school, the word had spread and I felt like an even bigger freak. Once I was dressed, I got an official request to meet with the school head. I was tempted to tell them all to blow me as I walked off, but I went anyways.

The office was cold, even with my cooler temperature. The room was large, full of windows, and overly expensive antiques. There were lush thick red drapes over the huge windows, but I doubted they actually helped to keep this room any warmer. Even with all the rich colors from the oriental rugs, well-worn leather wing back chairs by the enormous fireplace, and beautifully carved desk and bookcases, the room still felt cold. I decided it was the small squat of a man behind the desk that allowed such a welcoming setting to be so frigid.
He was about five foot, balding, and round around the middle. His face didn't hold the wrinkles of someone that smiled a lot, rather it seemed to be stuck in a constant frown. His eyes were a cold black, matching the few strands of hair he managed to comb over the giant shiny bald spot on the top of his head.

I desperately didn't want to have anything to do with the little cold man. As I stepped further into the room, I noticed Dominic standing next to Leland in his panther form. I was briefly annoyed by the fact that Leland clearly had enough sway with this little man that he didn't need to switch back to human form. Ugh.

Dominic stepped forward. “Head Master Spawling, may I introduce Miss Emma Hutchinson,” he gestured to me with a hand sweep.

Yes, Miss Hutchinson, I've heard quite a deal about you.” Spawling's words were like nails on a chalkboard.

I managed not to grit my teeth. “Unfortunately, Head Master Spawling, I've not had the pleasure. How do you do?” I tried my best to tone up the snobbery in my voice- he was so beneath me with his snakelike ways.

Quite fine. I understand that you have a rare talent.” His words were a statement. Something I'm sure will be of great use to the vampire community. His words echoed in my head.

I've quite a few of them if you want to get technical, so you'll have to be a little more specific than a 'rare talent'?” I didn't know why, but I felt I had to give him a hard time. I could only imagine all of the poor students that this man had intimidated.

So the attitude is a truth. How about your ability to heal- even bring back from the dead?” The calculation was present in his eyes.

Yes, but I've yet to try it on a human. Feel like volunteering?” I cocked my brow and fought the desire to sneer at him.

Emma!” Dom gasped.

It is quite all right, Mr. DeDominico. I've dealt with unruly students for more years than she has been alive. As interesting as your offer sounds, I'll have to decline. I would like to know more about you though. You can heal beyond what most dream of. I hear you're also quite talented with your mind. You're a Seer as well, if I'm not mistaken?” Spawling merely smiled at me.

Yes, sir. I can also turn into a wolf, which is why I assume you have deemed me worthy to summon me into your nice office. But I'll tell you the same thing I told Leland. I. Do. Not. Care. If. I. Can. Become. A. Wolf. I. Am. Not. A. Narc!” My temper was very near the surface, and I was tempted to try out my mental training from Betty- I wanted to hurt him bad.

No one is suggesting that you become a spy. And, I did call you in for your unique talents. However, the wolf aspect was merely icing on the cake. You see, Emma, you're a great asset to the vampire community. You are beyond our several professors here, and I'm sure with a little more control training you'll surpass Leland there with the ability to morph.” I heard a soft growl when he vaguely gestured to Leland.

So what? I don't plan on being part of the teaching scene. My people need me. I'm only here to ensure that I get the proper training before I fulfill my destiny.” My words were strong and once they were out I knew they were absolutely true.

Yes, your destiny. Let's talk about that.” He steepled his hands.

Oh, that is so it! Dominic, I'm leaving. This is shit. I kept my face calm. “My destiny, as of this moment, is leading me out of this room.” I turned and walked to the door, unfortunately Leland was sitting his big panther butt in front of it.

A low warning growl escaped from him.

Oh, please. You are no scarier than bunny slippers with fangs. Now move before I make you.” The threat seeped into my words in a frightening way.

Leland moved like he was ready to pounce on me. I rolled my eyes, the inner wolf was begging to be released. “You're nothing more than a lap dog, move.” I growled.

He didn't move. His body never left the attack stance. I released the wolf inside. My clothes swiftly shredded into tatters and I was once again the beautiful black wolf. My size was nowhere near the panther, but I knew Leland well enough to know he wouldn't be out to injure me. I was beginning to doubt whether or not I should hurt him just so he'd learn. My fur hackled and a snarling growl escaped from deep within me.

Dominic stepped between us. “Leland, I think you should let her pass.” His hands were up in a surrendering gesture.

Not bloody likely. I heard Leland project his thoughts.

Move you idiot. My fight isn't with you. I told Dom.

Mia bella, this is not the way to win this battle. His words were pleading, but calm.

I thought for a moment. The layout of the room was very box-like with the door on one end and the windows on the other. But as I retraced the memory of the room, I realized that there was an open window just to the left of Spawling's head. I knew instantly what I would do.

Dominic, I never took you for a coward. Nor did I ever expect you to stand against me on something so important to me. This issue is not up for debate. I will not be used. I've our people to help. I am done here. I turned faster than anyone expected and leapt through the window and made sure to slap Spawling with my tail on the way out.
