I felt like a doctor going into an operating room once I got to the wing that held her. There were guards stationed all over the floor, two particularly fierce ones outside her door.
“Greetings, Your Majesty.” They bowed in unison.
“Good day, how have things been?” I was afraid to ask.
“She behaved well except when the doctors tried to talk to her about two hours ago. Those doctors are now refusing to enter her room until she is fixed.” The big redhead said, his name was Georgie.
“Thank you, Georgie. You and Harold can take a break if you'd like once I enter. Is Dominic with her?” I asked Harold, the more quiet of the two brothers.
“No, he was here when the incident with the docs happened. They weren't hurt, just really rattled. You won't be going in alone will you, Your Majesty?” Concern flashed through his eyes, but his face stayed blank.
“No. I'm going to wait for Leland to come up. He should be here any minute.” I sat on the small bench across from her door. “Is there anything I can provide for you two or anyone doing guard duty on Miss Isabella?”
“No, we're quite happy. The wing is mostly quiet. Only us that sit outside this door actually know that anything is wrong with her. Most just believe she's being protected. Do you think she can be fixed?” Georgie's big brown eyes bore into me.
“I'm going to try my best to bring our Issy back to us. Once that happens, her grief will probably rule her and the doctors will need to be here- but the guard duty should lighten.” I tried not to show my fear that I wouldn't be able to heal her.
“She can do it, our Queen.” Leland said as he bowed to me.
“Thank you, Leland, for your support. We're gonna go in now. Once we're in, I want you to lock the door. You're welcome to take a short break- I don't expect anything will happen that I can't handle.” Images of Dominic attacking me last time wheeled through.
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Georgie and Harold both placed their right hands over their hearts and bowed.
As the doors opened, sunlight filled the hallway. It was slightly blinding. I wanted to reach and take Leland's hand for support, but I had to keep my game face on. I straightened my back, held my head up high, and marched into the room. Leland was slightly behind me- the proper position for a guard. The doors closed behind us with a sound of finality.
“Ah, you've come to see me as well... and you've brought the tasty Australian.” It was obvious she was in a mood.
“Yes, Issy, we've come to see you. And today I intend to bring you back to us.” My voice held the confidence my thoughts didn't.
“Bring me back to you?” She snorted.
“Yes, this isn't you. You've been spelled. I've told you before. Today I'm going to fix the spell. To heal you.” I looked her right in her big beautiful green eyes.
“And what if I don't want to be that pathetic girl again? What if I don't want to be the family outcast?” There was a hard glint to her eyes.
“You don't have a choice. Once you've been restored to your mental self, if you decide to be a vindictive bitch, that's your choice.” The sneer leaked out of my words.
“Isabella, you don't wanna be that person- this person. You were the sweetest dame out there. I'd gladly take you as my lady if you come back to us from the dark side, darl.” His face was truthful and hopeful.
“You want me, Cowboy?” She laughed.
“Yep. I've always wanted you, sweet cheeks. But you were supposed to wed that cheese bucket.. I couldn't step on toes for love.” His smile was bright and happy.
“Interesting... fine, Emma, you can do whatever it is you think you can do to help me. And you, Cowboy, I'll remember what you said once I'm on the flipside.” She purred at Leland.
I spelled her to sleep before she could decide otherwise.
“Leland, if you want me to take that out of her mind while I'm poking around in there once she's normal, I can...” I wasn't sure if the offer was moral, but it felt right regardless.
“What I said to her was true. When Issy left with the wolf, it was heartbreaking, but it left opportunity for her to one day come back to us. The douchebag she was supposed to wed, took off with some just-turned redhead and got married within three months after he was supposed to be married to Is.” His heart was on his sleeve now.
“Leland, do you still want to be tied to me? The ceremony tonight might affect some of this stuff...” I was floundering.
“Emma, I know that those that serve the royalty have to have little to no family, and are willing to put their life before whatever they have on the outside. If Issy comes back to the vamps, then she'd have a place here as Dom's sister... which would put her here with me. If she doesn't then I don't have to worry about it. She's gonna go through a rough bit anyways, darl.” He shrugged.
“True. I trust your choices, Leland. Now let's test my awesomeness.” I winked at him as I sat next to her, took her hand, and closed my eyes.
Her mental state was the same as before. I was slightly worried that her mind might adjust to functioning like this and then go into shock should it be restored. I waded through the chaos that was piled in her thoughts. It was almost impossible to try and pretend like the mess wasn't there, but after a while I adjusted to it. I was able to find the threads that make up who we are. Each was coated in a thick green slime, I wasn't sure it was meant to deter or just be horribly gross.
The slime made it hard to find the source of the spell. I could feel when I was going the wrong way, but when I went the other way it felt all the same. It was like a bad game of Marco Polo. Once I was going the right direction, I decided it was best to stop and let my mind adjust to this new element- much like I had to do with the strange-cluttered chaos.
Since time is different in that state, I wasn't sure how long I sat letting the slime become used to me and me to it- but I knew it was quite a while. After a while I began to feel a subtle undercurrent that only led in one direction. It was like the gentle hum of an electronic device being on, or the tiny squealing sound that you hear when a television has been left on without an image on the screen. Visually nothing had changed, but I could feel the power of the spell now. Following it back to its source suddenly became a piece of cake.
However, when something presents itself as too easy, you should always be leery. The spell was a snarled, jagged bleeding wound of glass and pain. It tied into all of Issy. I knew I was getting tired, but since I had finally encountered the damn thing, I was not going to let my exhaustion push me away from healing my friend.
I studied the spell for as long as I could stand. There were gentle differences, like it was color coded for manipulation.
I need to figure out the right color combination and then it should be a snap. I tried not to pout.
I had no clue what would happen if I tried to untangle my friend in the wrong order, but I figured it could only be a terrible thing.
Logic this out... think, Emma. What could the possible order be? My thoughts whirled with possibilities.
Magic functions on some basic level of nature. It's what manipulates it, but it's still part of nature... what's super colorful in nature?... Trees, plants, rocks, hmm... Rainbows! I turned back to the mess in front of me and I knew it was the colors of a rainbow.
It took me a few more minutes to figure out the right order for a rainbow, but as soon as I had it I approached the beast holding her captive and began unweaving it.
The spell wasn't knitted together, it was shaped around the very fabric that made up Isabella. For every strand of spell, I had to work it from its anchor in her subconscious, and then pull it bit by bit out of her. I could feel her sleeping body react to my manipulation of the spell, I knew it was probably a little painful for her, but I managed to keep her asleep as I worked. If she woke while I did this, it would empower the spell and sink it deeper into her... I could feel that, and I knew if it got to that then I would never be able to get our Issy back.
When I held the violet strand, after freeing it from Issy, I began deconstructing the spell. There were no markers on it which would tell me who made the damn thing, but I could see it was done by a very powerful witch. Once I had it broken down, my only option was to zap it the hell out of her. The pain would flare through her and wake her, but I had no other option- it couldn't stay even in pieces inside her.
Even with my exhaustion, my energy recoil was like a shock to my system. When I sent it to the spell, it blew me back into my own mind and startled her awake.
“Em?” Her voice was pinched with pain.
“Yes... Issy?” I tried to restraint the gasping spasm of my breathing.
“What the hell happened to me?” I could still hear the pain in her voice, but she was coming through it all.
“What's the last thing you remember?” I was very aware of Leland hovering next to me with concern all over his face.
“I remember walking toward that club... you know the one where everyone can go... and then nothing... what happened?” Issy looked at me with serious worry in her eyes.
“Oh, Issy. Shit, I wish you remembered more. This is gonna be hard, sweetie.” I sat up straight and inched closer to her to retake her hand.
“Where am I? And why is Leland here?” She was starting to get scared.
“You're at the vampire palace in Italy. You're home. We brought you here after the accident. Honey, I don't know how to tell you this so it doesn't hurt- Jack's dead.” I let the words hit her.
“What?” Shocked covered her face.
“You guys were attacked by the rogue witches that are trying to start war between us. Only Jack was killed because you're a vampire and he was a very public wolf figure. The wolves believe you did it.” I didn't know what to tell her, I figured all of it was best.
“I killed Jack...”
“No. The witches did and then they spelled you. It took me a while, but I just got the spell off you. Leland, can you get Dom for me?” It came out more of a statement than a question, but I heard the light knock, whispered talking, and then Leland was standing by me again.
“I was spelled, and Jack is dead.” Her eyes were empty.
“Yes, I'm so sorry, Issy.” I didn't know what to do.
“Isabella!” Dominic rushed through the door and threw himself at his sister.
“Dominic?” Her face flashed confused before it shut down again.
“Yes, Issy. I was so worried. Thank you so much, mia bella!” He gave me a meaningful look while he continued to hold his sister.
“Can I have some time alone?” Her voice was distant.
“Yes, of course. There are people here that will want to see you later... but now rest. If you need either of us, just have one of the attendants outside your door fetch us.” I said to her as I rose.
“Thank you, Em. For everything.” She managed a weak smile before her gaze shifted out the window.
I tried my best to walk out the room, but there was a slight limp in my step.
“Darl, you okay?” Leland whispered as we reached the door.
“ I will be, I just need to rest.” I gestured for the door.
“Mia bella, what happened?” Dom's eyes were bright with excitement- I just couldn't reach that level.
“Later, my love. I must rest.” I said as I stepped through the door.
“Is she well now, Your Majesty?” Georgie took in my appearance and concern shifted his face.
“She is once again our Isabella. However, she didn't remember the death of her lover, so she'll grieve. Please keep a sharp ear on her, and check on her in a few hours if she doesn't requested anything. I told her you were attendants, so try not to look frightening should she come out.” I told the two very gently.
“Yes, of course, Your Majesty. We're proud to serve you. Perhaps you should rest, Milady.” Georgie said with such warmth it made my eyes tear up.
“Thank you, Georgie. I believe I'll do just that.” I walked myself out of the wing unassisted.
“Mia bella, let me carry you. No more saving face.” Dom's arms encircled me just as my body gave way to exhaustion.
“Em, rest. We'll handle everything for a while, darl.” Leland's words echoed in my mind as I fell asleep.
It took several days for Issy to be willing to talk to anyone. Then it took weeks before she actually wanted to come out into the palace. Our concern was brushed aside by her doctors. Each one of them told us to give her time, but to not let her dwell in her sorrow. I sent Leland to play cards with her.
Since I forced him to let me go through the ceremony the night I healed Issy, I didn't have enough energy to be aroused by anything, so all we did was the sacred kiss that sealed his servitude to me. I could tell he had to fight the need, but I think in the end we were both thankful.
I was able to send him anywhere and I knew that he would know if I was in danger and he 'd come. It was a nice feeling, since Dominic had lots of Bella Notte work to attend to away from Italy and his sparse teaching schedule-something I missed dearly, but was glad my students were still continuing their training, and Mike was in Ireland trying to keep his people peaceful while we solve Jack's murder.
The day I took Issy's guards away was a beautiful day. I could see she wanted to be able to walk in the gardens without someone watching her every move. I had all the wing guards dispatched back to their regular roles. Georgie and Harold would remain on Issy detail as her bodyguards, but they'd start the following day. I had her brought into the library.
“Issy, I know that you're tired of being stuck with around-the-clock eyes on you. Part of it was for your protection, and the other part was because I needed to know that you were totally back to yourself.” I said to her.
“Em, you can see I'm me again.” Her eyes pleaded for me to understand.
“I know. I've taken the wing guards off, and for today you'll be on your own. But tomorrow Harold and Georgie will start as your bodyguards. We don't know if the wolves will come after you, or if the witches will strike at you again.” I wanted her to know her situation.
“I understand. Thank you for today. I suppose I'm restricted to the grounds though?” I could tell she was trying to make the best of it.
“Unfortunately, unless you want to take the boys with you, yes.” I hated feeling like a tyrant, but I wanted her to be safe.
“Then I'll just walk around outside.” She rose from her seat.
“Thank you, Issy. I know this is trying. You'll have a little more freedom as soon as we solve Jack's murder.” I stood as well.
“I know. Don't worry about it. I'll catch you later... for an early dinner, maybe we can watch a movie together tonight?” It touched me that she was finally reaching out for me.
“Of course. I'll have the kitchen make some pizza and we can munch while we watch.” I beamed at her.
“Later then.” She walked out.
I made the calls to the kitchen, and to have the media room prepared for us. I wanted her to have an awesome evening. I wasn't sure if I should have all the romance films removed from the collection, but decided against it.
“Darl, you worry too much.” Leland's words startled me.
“What? Why? I don't want her to hurt.” I looked at him sharply.
“She's healing. She'll always have that ache. But she doesn't have the memories of his death anymore. She'll be fine. I don't think she needs eggshells, she needs her mates to help remind her to live.” He shrugged and stepped back into the shadows.
“Hey, you butt, get back in here. No fading out... I know those passages better than you do.” I tried to make it sound authoritative, but I was laughing.
“Yes, ya do. What can I do for you?” His eyes were smiling.
“Do you wanna be there tonight? I know you guys are getting friendly... maybe she would be calmer with me if you were there.” I really worried that she hated me.
“Em, she loves you. She's thankful for what you've done for her. But she doesn't feel like she fits anymore. I think you two should hang out. I'm always around when you need me, darl.” He smiled and walked back to the hidden passage.
“Fine.” I huffed out to the empty room.
I spent most of the day dealing with small problems that needed immediate attention from the vampire community. It was the kind of day where you wish everyone would take their petty problems and shove them where the sun doesn't shine.
At four forty-five, I was done for the day. I didn't care what else happened, I was going to hang out with Issy. My mood lifted as I walked into the media room and found pizza set out and a whole delicious collection of junk food and soda.
Wonderful. I sighed blissfully.
The door creaked open and Leland stepped in. His face was slightly flushed from running and there was panic in his eyes.
Damn, fucking shit. I blew out a breath.
“What's wrong?” I marched over to him.
“She's gone! Isabella is gone!” He was shouting at me and pacing all over like she would appear if he checked under the tables.
“What the hell do you mean 'she's gone'? Gone like she left or gone like she's been taken!” I shouted at him.
“I believe she's been taken.” His voice was solemn.
“Shit! Go get Georgie, Harold, and Derrick, now!” I ordered him.
Dominic! Michael! I sent out the shout in one.
Mia bella, what's wrong? Dom's voice was calm.
Em, something's wrong? Mike's was worried.
I shared the connection between all of us as I explained what had happened.
I just got her back! I can't lose her now! Dominic was furious.
Emma, I think it was my people. There is a tension that appeared suddenly. They can't hold a tribune without Acacia and me. I'll find out. I'll let you know. He broke away from us.
Dom, we're going to do everything we can. Leland, the Boys, and Derrick just stepped in, we'll trace what we can here. I'll let you know things as I find them. I think you need to come home. I didn't know what to say.
I've already sent a message to have the plane prepared. I'll be there by ten tonight. He shut me out.
“Okay, boys, tell me what you know.” I sat down.
“Your Majesty, we lost track of her around four o'clock. I thought she ducked us and was hiding out in the garden somewhere. It's my fault.” Georgie hung his head.
“You weren't on duty anyways, don't blame yourself, Georgie. We'll find her. It's been an hour since she was last seen.” I took a breath.
“All the security tapes during that time went down. But we have trackers out there trying to figure out what or who took her.” Derrick's voice was calm.
“What do you know, Em?” Leland dropped all pretense of me being above anyone.
“Mike thinks it might have been the wolves. He's checking and will get back to me. Dominic is on his way and will be home before ten tonight.” I huffed out a breath.
“We have time. Don't fret, Your Majesty.” Derrick bowed to me.
“Thank you, Derrick. You're all free to go... if I hear that the wolves have her, I'll let you know.” I just sat and looked down at my hands, I just couldn't see how this could end well.
It took an hour, but by then I knew that the wolves had her. Our trackers confirmed the presence of unknown wolves just as Mike was making contact.
Dammit, Michael. What the devil will happen now? I tried to restrain myself.
She'll be held prisoner until the next full moon, then she'll have a tribunal. I don't see that going well, Em. I can't force my people to let her go without having the real murderer. He sounded drawn out and without hope.
Then we'll find the damn murderer. Where will the tribunal be? And don't try and tell me that it's a wolf thing- we'll be there, period. Anger filled my body.
I'd never even think of it, Em. It'll be done in the basement of the school. It's more like a huge cavern. I want you to know that once you're in, it'll be hard to protect you. You'll have to pick your party very selectively. I knew that I'd be risking my life for Issy, again.
I want Dom, me, Leland, Kelly if she'll go, and Issy's two bodyguards, oh and Derrick. Will that be too large? I was trying to cover all my bases.
Your party of seven will be granted access. Be safe and smart in your planning, Em. I've got to go see to Isabella and to the tribunal. He left me to think.
The first thing I did was let everyone know that the wolves had taken her. I had Leland call Kelly and see if she could go. Derrick and the Boys were assigned to prepare what we'd need and could conceal. The full moon was a day away- so we'd have to move quickly.
Dom's flight arrived on time. By the time he was back at the house, he looked like the angel of death. His hair was standing up in sharp angles, he was wearing black cargo pants loaded with weapons, and he had his battle vest on.
“Dom, we don't leave until tomorrow. Temptation will be too strong to go try to steal her back. We will not cause more problems.” My voice was final.
“She's my sister and I will not have her killed for a crime she didn't commit.” Rage roared through him.
“You'll calm down and think this through.” I crossed my arms- I knew that Leland and Derrick were in the shadows watching in case Dom lost control.
“You are right. We need to do this smart. I'm sorry, mia bella.” He clasped into a nearby chair like a deflated balloon.
“We'll get her back, Dom. You have to have faith. I've got everyone we can spare trying to trace the witches. If we can't get a body to the wolves then we'll present the evidence to them. If worst comes to worst, I'll take Mike hostage.” My eyes flickered cold and hard.
“Em, that's like an act of treason. The wolves would never trust us again- if we lived to see the next day.” I could feel the fear rolling off him.
“Then let's hope it doesn't come to that.” I stood and gave him a hug before I walked off to get more gear together.
“We can't look like we're going in ready for war. The four of you can look like bodyguards, but I'm positive any weapons that aren't hidden well, will be taken. I've got my boots with the daggers in the tips... which also have hidden niches for more, but I think they would check that. Do we have any collapsible weapons?” My mind was running a hundred miles per minute.
“We have a short sword that is created by putting two pins together. They're hairpins. We also have a brooch of your house symbol that can leave an explosive opinion. And a silver whip that is concealed in a bracelet. For Master Dominic, we've retrofitted a pair of boots. Also, we've got a belt buckle that becomes a double-ended dagger. He'll wear two silver cuffs that can be expanded to protect his arms. We can't cover him in jewelry, so he'll have to fall back on his skills.” Derrick's voice was gruff.
“Understood, old friend.” Dom clapped him on the back.
I didn't ask what they'd carry or how they'd hide it. I just knew they would.
“I think it's time for us to rest before we've to take that flight tomorrow, goodnight.” I gathered my new toys and walked out of the room.
My night was plagued by images of those closest to me being ripped to shreds by very angry werewolves. When I woke in the late morning, my eyes were crusty and heavy. They felt like a thin layer of slime had been spread across them like a nice cheese spread. My entire body felt achy with fatigue.
Today's going to be a very long day. I dragged myself into a small dining room where I was hoping to run into more of the group. I wasn't disappointed.
The first thing I noticed was that everyone seemed to be lacking their usual shine. The night hadn't been kind to anyone. Derrick showed deep purple circles under his eyes. The Boys seemed to be using each other to prop themselves up. Leland's cocky face was pulled in worry and stress. My beautiful Dominic looked like he had been hit by a truck. His hair was plastered down from obvious night sweats, his eyes were dull with a need for sleep, and he was missing his usual vitality.
“Morning, troops.” I smiled regardless of how I was feeling.
There was a mumble of recognition.
Yep, a very long day. I realized that I was going to have to figure out how to breathe life back into these gents. I grabbed a stack of coffee cups and set one in front of each person. I poured the strongest coffee that the staff could brew for us. I secretly dropped a few drops of werewolf blood into the mix. I knew that it was what was best for the mission- opinions be damned.
“Drink up.” I toasted my cup into the air and slugged back the black brew.
Each one did the same thing, and then looked at me. I knew that they all knew there was wolf blood in the brew, but they didn't say anything. I could see the effects of the poor night begin to wear off. I got up and poured a second cup for each one. I only had to stare down Dom about drinking it.
“Eat something too. We have to be strong and alert tonight. The tribunal should happen as the moon rises, we land about six. We'll have a little time to do some recon and figure out the possible exits in case things go bad.” I bit into a nice piece of bacon.
“Em, what do you think will happen? You're closest to the wolves...” Derrick was trying to find out any info I might have.
“I've no clue about what the trial will be like... I know that there is a quaint vamp hotel on the school's protective inner ring- I planted it there. There's a protective ring that's meant to challenge anyone from going into their territory. I've requested that this be taken down while we're there... I don't want the wolves to know about my hotel. The school's an imposing building of old and new. I had no clue about any underground caverns. We'll just have to take things as they go and try to be as prepared for anything as possible.” I shrugged.
“Clearly they've magic on their side, maybe they attacked Jack... maybe it's the wolves we should've been fighting all along.” Leland piped up.
“It's not the wolves that are against us. The witches we're dealing with are trying to pin us against each other... and, look, it seems to be working.” My look was icy.
“You're right, darl. Sorry.” Leland looked down at his plate.
“We'll not go in there believing that the wolves are to blame for everything. They think Issy killed their beloved Jack- they want her tried for it. We would want the same thing if it had happened to us. Don't even try to deny it.” I looked pointedly at each of them.
“Sì, mia bella, that's correct.” Dom was lost to his own thoughts as he spoke- his Italian accent colored his words.
“Well, after we eat, I suggest everyone rest a little more and then gather their gear. We leave here around one thirty.” I went back to eating the pile of food I didn't really want to eat, but knew I needed to.
I left the dining room and sat on my bed. I looked at the things that surrounded me. It was nothing like my room back in the US, or even at the DeDominico's. The room was meant to feel regal. I decided that if I made it through this ordeal then that was going to change. My space would reflect who I was as a person, not the position I now held.
I went through the systematic motions of laying out my outfit and gear. My body moved, but my mind felt detached. I wanted to be somewhere else, and not have all this horrible shit in my life. I took a deep breath.
“You asked for this, Emma.” I said to my room.
“True, but I never thought it'd be so damn dangerous!” I felt exasperated even with myself.
“Most things are never what we think they're going to be.” My thoughts drifted over my relationships with Dominic, Michael, and Leland- I wasn't even sure what I had with any of these men.
“Well, enough of that.” I dusted my hands together and focused my thoughts back on the task at hand.
I pulled on a sheer body stocking that had been fabricated not to show, but to protect the heck out of me- it was almost impenetrable. My black loose soft leather pants went on next. I slipped my red rip apart riding skirt over them. My black leather vest went on and hugged my breasts to my chest- it also added a slightly plated armor to me. The boots were the easiest to get on from so much wear. The well worn soft leather molded to my foot and cupped my calves. The thin daggers shinged out when I tapped the hidden switch. I double tapped the switch and back they slid, like the silent predators they were.
Next came my hair. I pulled it into a high ponytail and then braided it down my back. I had seen enough movies to know that as cool as swishing hair looks, it's the first thing that people grab in a close fight. I wrapped the braid around the band until I had a very simple braided bun. I slipped the two pins in to make it look like they held it all together. They glittered like eyes in my hair.
I stuck an emerald stud in each lobe. My usual hoops would be a target to get yanked out. I slipped on the bracelet that would coil for me and crack through skulls if need be. The last item I added was the brooch- part of me really hoped I wouldn't have to use any of this stuff.
My make-up was done striking. My eyes were lined with a rich black, elongating the lines. My lids were shaded until my eyes were shadowed by a darkness that drew out the green of my eyes. My lips I painted blood red- my white teeth shone like stars against the color.
The final look was frightening. I looked like I was ready for a battle, but also an afternoon ride. It was easily something a queen could wear without anyone suspecting anything. I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew that I could make it pass their security.
When one o'clock chimed on my small mantel clock, I walked with my head high and shoulders back out to the front of the house. Two black SUVs waited for us. Kelly had agreed to meet us at my hotel. I was very grateful that she decided to come. Dom followed next. He was dressed similar to me, but he managed to look like a rueful boy rather than a threatening man. The Boys, Harold and Georgie, came next. They were armed and definitely looked the part of bodyguards. Leland came out wearing something similar to Dom, but he wore nothing black, only red. It reminded me of the royal guard in Star Wars. I tried hard not to snicker. Derrick came out last. He was dressed in the darkest black I had ever seen. His pale green eyes were shocking against the effect. The only caramel skin left to be seen was on his face, but I knew that had a protective coat of something on it. All the men that thought they would fight, were basically covered from head to foot in a clear coating that had been sprayed on their skin.
Okay, then. Our silent communication would work best for this, so I started off with it.
We're ready, Your Majesty. The Boys, Derrick, and Leland formally bowed to me.
Dom, you good too? I didn't want any doubt present.
Yes, mia bella. We shall win this fight, one way or another. His words were icy in my mind.
Then let's move out. I let Derrick open my door.
Dom and I were to ride in separate cars. The Boys would ride with him, Leland and Derrick with me. The atmosphere didn't change just because there were less bodies in the car. I could feel the tension roll around the car like waves on the sea. It made me want to cringe and vomit. I had to fight both desires. The airport came without incident, and I could tell that Dom had a similar car ride.
Let's load up and get in the air. I had everyone grab a bag from the trunks of each car.
Each person had the same contents in each bag. Loose black linens, first aid kit, a small set of bathroom necessities, and a copy of a letter should something happen to anyone. I carried two- an extra for Kelly. Dom carried the extra for Issy. We had the intent of coming away with her... and all of us unharmed. But we were also prepared in case something went terribly wrong.
The bags were stored, Dom and I retired to the bedroom compartment, and each of the others took a bench seat to lay across. We all knew we had to rest for the next three hours.
The three hours flew by and we all managed to sleep. I had everyone have a shot of werewolf blood.
This isn't up for debate. It makes us stronger, heals our wounds, and will help us keep clearer minds. My voice was solid- I wouldn't be budged on this.
Everyone nodded.
We landed on the gentle strip of green where I had landed on my small vacation. My thoughts drifted back to my time in Ireland. My face flushed slightly as I remembered my blood ceremony with Mike- nothing like my wedding to Dom, or the ceremony that bound Leland to my service.
I shook off my memories like a fog.
We unloaded and packed our gear on the backs of the motorcycles that had been stored. How they had managed to fit six bikes in the cargo hold I had no clue, but I wasn't going to argue either.
The small road flew by in a soft hum of green. I knew that the circle of protection had been taken down when we passed the spot and no one reacted.
They've kept their side of the deal so far. No vamp warding. I informed everyone once we were in the wolves' territory.
Good. Let's hope that they'll keep to justice as well. Dom's thoughts were clouded in darkness.
They will. This will all turn out well. I pushed my brightness into his mind, and spread it to the others.
The hotel's exterior looked exactly the same when I had came across it before. I could smell that other vampires had been through here. A smile crept across my face despite the situation.
Moira came out holding a small bundle of joy. Her face beamed when she saw me.
“Dia dhuit, Emma, Cad é mar a tá tú?” Moira's smile was bright and cheery.
“Dia is Muire duit, Moira. Tá mé go maith. I see the little one is looking quite fine.” I tickled the child's chin.
“I know that we're just yer stop off point, but I do hope that yah'll come in fer some tea?” She took in each of us with her knowing eyes.
“I think that would be most pleasant. We truly appreciate this. This area will be spelled once we leave. No one will know that we stopped here.” I tried not to worry the new mother.
“Emma, I know what's been happenin' up at that ol' school. They took one of yers. Whether we're spelled or not, they'll find out about this place one way or another. Fillean meal ar an meallaire.” She spit on the ground.
“True, I hope they get what's coming to them.” I tried to suppress my chuckle.
“Well, then come in. Rest yerselves before yah go up gallivanting there catchin' yer death of cold. Oh, and yer friend left a note for yah about meeting ya up there.” She shuffled back into the cozy atmosphere of the inn.
We spent a few hours enjoying proof of the living. It was a way to remind us why we were fighting all these wars. The importance of family was evident- we needed to save our family- including Isabella. When we left Moira and her beautiful baby Agnus, our hearts were a little fuller and weighed a little more.
The ground was covered in a gentle creeping mist. It masked our movements, but also made it hard to see the school properly. All chances of us finding an alternative way out became bleak as the mist turned into a thick fog.
How will they know when the moon rises if you can't even see it? Leland scowled at the grayish goop.
The same way any true creature of the night does. It's natural. I'm sure they can look up local information about the moon cycles too. They'll do this by the book, so we have two hours until we're expected to present ourselves before the Wolfen Court. I really didn't want to present myself anywhere- I just wanted to get Issy out and go home.
Let's not waste those two hours. I'll do some scouting. Leland said as he seemed to disappear into the fog- his red clothes completely vanished.
What the hell? Derrick mumbled.
One of Leland's gifts is invisibility. As long as he is stealthy, the wolves won't notice him if he gets near the building... also they won't smell him because of the blood he ingested. I didn't want to sound smug- but one of the side effects of taking werewolf blood was that it masked the vampire scent with a wolf one.
It seems that our Queen is very wise and doesn't always reveal her hand. Your Majesty has dealt our hand in our favor. Dom bowed to me.
Stubbornness and being unwilling to use all the tools available to us will not help us get Issy back. I was merely willing to make the choice for you, especially if it would help us. I wasn't going to apologize for not telling them everything.
Mistress Emma, is there anything else that the wolf blood will do for us? Georgie asked, his eyes big with wonder.
The wolf that donated the blood will feel a little more connected to the vampires that he has given it to. Should anything fatal happen to us, he'll feel it physically. I hear it would be quite painful. I smiled.
Who was the wolf? Dom's eyes were luminous orbs of fiery green.
Mike and Acacia, I also believe one of their closest men. They're all high on the scale of importance. It would be unwise of them to let anything happen to us. They know what would happen to them if that occurs. I kept my face blank.
You're very smart, Mistress Emma. Harold smiled at me with a big toothy grin.
Thank you. Now let's see what Leland can bring us back in terms of intel. I let the conversation lag out.
It took him an hour to come back to us. I sensed him and turned. He faded back to us out of the mist.
Holy hell! Derrick mumbled with a start.
What do you have for us? I giggled slightly as I asked.
I'm glad to see a smile on your face, darl. What I learned was that there appear to be three entrances to these caverns. One is the main one, there are two offshoots hidden amongst the tree line. One is disguised as a tree trunk, and the other a large stone. There are gates just on the insides of the entrances. There are a lot of guards at the main entrance, I counted fifteen, but I believe there will be more once the time draws closer to our arrival. There are guards on patrol around the place too. It makes a high security prison look like a cakewalk, darl. Aye, it's gonna be a hard one. I didn't see any people posted at these alternate routes, but I don't know if that will change once the tribunal starts. That's all I got. He stared at them.
Very good, Leland. At least that gives us hope for a backup plan. Georgie and Harold, if we need to, do you think you could break down a gate? I looked at them.
Yes, Your Majesty. Strength is one of our gifts. They beamed at me.
Excellent. Now, Leland while you were walking about them, did you notice what sort of weapons we're up against? I wanted as much information as possible.
Most just look like they're carrying basic guard weapons- a gun, some clips, maybe a throwing knife or two. But there are some that are clearly specially trained in unique weaponry. I think I saw a device used to rip the heart out. There were a few flame throwers. Oh, and several people walking around with serious swords. What the weapons or defenses are inside, I'm not sure. Leland's face was pale.
Then we won't give them any reason to use any of these colorful implements. My smile was bright and sure- something I didn't feel inside.
When should we head up there, Em? Dom didn't know what the best approach would be, and he wasn't happy being stuck asking me questions.
I think that if we take the winding road up, we could leave for there now. What do you think Leland, since you just scouted? I knew I had to keep everyone involved.
Yes, that'd take about forty-five minutes. He nodded his head.
Excellent. Emma, mia bella, I think that we should stand with them surrounding us. It was a statement.
Yes, Dom. I smiled and gestured for him to set up our little party.
By the time we set out, Leland was in the front, Derrick was in the back, and Harold and Georgie sandwiched Dom and I together.
Dominic, what's wrong? I couldn't have him being in a bad mood when I needed his top game.
I feel like I don't know you anymore, mia bella. You're not the girl from our childhood, or the young woman I reconnected with. His lips pouted.
Well, of course not! I laughed.
I feel like you have so many secrets from me. His eyes were a dark green and brooding.
My love, you're the one to talk. I'm not the girl or woman I once was because the person I need to be these days is a queen... therefore I'm a queen. Anything that you don't know isn't necessarily a lie, but could merely be a result of your lack of attentiveness. Dom, I married you, I love you, I'll rule beside you, but I will not have you question any decision I make as a ruler, or question my loyalty. You know of my feelings toward Michael... that hasn't changed, nor ever will it. I could feel my temper rising, Leland looked back at me with concerned eyes.
I don't question your choices or your loyalty. His words were defensive.
I watched Leland hop up onto a fallen tree and offer me his hand to help me over.
Dom, if you didn't you wouldn't be wondering if I'm sleeping with your best friend. I closed my mind off to him and was greatly satisfied by the look of sheer shock on his face.
I took Leland's hand and waited for the rest of the party to scramble over the tree. We walked in silence. I debated about telling Leland of Dom's worries, but it wasn't a serious concern at the moment. Dom reached out and took my arm.
I'm sorry, mia bella. You're right, again. His head hung in shame.
Now isn't the time for such petty worries, we need to survive all this and then we can clear the table. I broke free of his hold and stepped ahead of him.
When we reached the top, we were all strung with tension. It was colder, and a breeze had picked up. We walked up to the steps. A man came forward and greeted us.
“Welcome, Yer Majesties. If ye and yer party will follow me.” His hair was clipped short, but his smile was kind- I briefly wondered if he was one of our wolf donators.
“Yes, of course.” I said and nodded for my people to follow me- Leland fell back slightly to allow Dom and I to step forward, but he wasn't far enough behind us to be out of my sight.
The man droned on as we walked through several halls. He spoke of their history and heritage, as if that would matter at this moment. When we came to two very large wooden doors, he stopped.
“One moment, Yer Majesties, and I'll announce yer party.” He slipped into the room ahead of us.
Everyone keep your wits and calm. Show no reaction. I cautioned them, as the doors opened.
“The King and Queen of the vampires, and their party.” The words filled the room as we stepped inside.
It was the leftover from the ruins of a throne room. There was a long red carpet that led up to the thrones- yes, there were real golden thrones atop three steps. The room was lit by candles and had several high stained glass windows. It was a chilly, drift-filled room because it was all worn stones. I didn't want to be in it.
Dom and I stepped forward, Derrick and Leland filed in after us, then Harold and Georgie. We would present ourselves in order of our rank- highest first. We didn't make a sound as we glided down the walkway. I watched the mood change in the room as several of the wolves didn't like how quiet we were. They would find out we could be silent and deadly, if the need arose.
Acacia and Mike rose from their thrones as we approached. Dominic and I bowed our heads in tribute, but the Boys all took a knee.
“Merry Met, Queen Emma and King Dominic.” Acacia came and embraced us.
“Merry Met, Your Majesty.” I wasn't sure of her official title yet.
“Oh, not yet. But soon enough.” She smiled at us.
“Merry Met, Em and Dom.” Mike shook hands with Dom and gave me a huge hug and a kiss on my cheek.
“Merry Met, Mike.” We said in unison.
“Please rise, your men are well trained.” Acacia gestured for them to get up.
“Thank you.” Dom said stiffly.
“Normally we would invite you to a feast or something in honor of your arrival. However, because of the circumstances, we'll proceed to the tribunal room.” Acacia said.
“Would it be possible to see our sister, before this trial?” I asked Mike, I wouldn't use Acacia as the go-between.
“That request would usually be denied. However, we'll grant a brief audience for you and Dominic.” Mike rose. “Your men will have to stay here though.”
Leland and Derrick stepped forward, Harold and Georgie tensed. I shook my head slightly.
“Will you ensure their safety?” I asked Acacia.
“Of course.” Her smile was honest enough.
I'll stay in contact with you. I sent the Boys.
“Please follow me.” Mike led the way.
The passage was dark and dank. I didn't want to step further into the oppressive atmosphere. I swallowed back my comments and followed Mike down.
“Has she been well cared for?” I doubted it.
“She has been as cared for as we could, under the circumstances.” His voice pleaded for us to understand.
“Understood.” Dom's voice was icy.
“We've bent many rules and traditions. But once she was here, she was safe from harm. I've had my most trusted men guarding her.” I could feel his despair of the situation.
“Was she hurt before she got to you, Michael?” I hoped to never hear Dominic turn so cold again.
“Yes.” The air seemed to charge.
“Is she alright?” I sent a small prayer up to protect us all.
“She's healing. She's had blood. Her spirits are very low.” His head was downcast.
I couldn't think of anything that would fix this.
“Did Kelly make it up here?” Maybe a change of subject would help the mood.
“Yep. She's down in the tribunal room. She wanted to go there as soon as she got here. She seemed really twitchy.” Mike shook his head.
“Well, at least she's here.” I forced a smile.
We stopped at a wooden door. Mike knocked on it, and a piece slid back. A pair of eyes peered out. Then the wood creaked as it was opened for us.
“How is she?” Mike asked as soon as we were through.
“She's scared. She wouldn't take blood today. Who are they?” The man was gruff.
“The vampire King and Queen. Show your respect.” Mike's tone was harsh.
“Beggin' yer pardons, Yer Majesties.” He bowed slightly.
“You're the one keeping Issy safe?” I poured my thoughts at him, and looked into his thoughts.
“Yes, ma'am.” I knew he truly was.
“Then we're in your debt.” I bowed down to him.
“If there is anything that the vampires can do for you, don't hesitate to ask.” Dom added with his bow.
“When this is all said and done... I would like to be added to the vampire guards, Yer Majesties.” His thoughts showed me he was tired of the werewolves and their crap traditions, he wanted to protect people and do the right thing.
“It shall be done, if Michael doesn't object.” Dom looked at Mike.
“It's his choice. Several of my men would like to join up with you guys, actually.” He lowered his voice.
“We'll discuss this later than.” I smiled at him.
“Come, she's over here.” Mike took an ancient key off the wall.
The door was something out of a castle dungeon.
“Issy?” I called out as Mike was unlocking it.
“Emma?! You came?” Her voice warbled.
“Of course we came, sweetheart.” I said as the door swung open.
“Isabella.” Dom embraced his sister gently.
Her beautiful blonde hair was pulled back. There were bruises all over her. Her left eye was swollen. She had a nasty gash on her lip.
“My goodness! Michael O'Shanold! What the hell did they do to her?” My rage ripped through me.
“Quite a bit. We've tried healing it, but she won't take the blood and our doctors aren't very good at healing vampires.” His cheeks shaded red.
“You idiot!” I snarled at him and shoved Dom out of the way.
“Oh, Em!” Tears coursed down her cheeks, I saw all the images of the day she had been taken in very graphic detail- she had been abused inside and out.
“Lay back, honey. I can heal the outside, and internal bruises. But the scars on the inside we'll work through together, sweetheart.” I looked meaningfully at Dom as I said 'internal bruises' and hoped he understood.
I knelt at her side, closed my eyes and took her hand. I coursed through her body healing any injury I could find. I knew that this would only take away the physical pain and she'd be haunted for years, if not the rest of her existence. I opened my eyes. When I stood my knees popped.
“Michael, we'll have words about this. This will not go without punishment. Whether it's dealt by you or us- it'll be done. I know the people responsible.” I hissed the words at him.
“Yes.” He cringed back.
“Let her rest until she needs to be taken to the tribunal.” I said as we left Issy resting on her cot.
“Yes.” The gruff man said.
“We love you, Issy. And this'll all be over soon.” I whispered at her.
When we entered the room, Leland was separated from the rest of the group and had a wickedly sharp sword pointed at him.
Good grief. What now? I knew I had to stay calm.
“Why is one of our men being restrained in such a manner?” I let Dom ask the question.
“He tried to insist on going to where his queen was,” was the answer Acacia provided.
“Release him.” Mike's voice boomed.
Leland, are you okay? I asked.
Yes, I could feel your distress and anger... and for what they did to her. His anger rolled off him in waves.
You control yourself, Leland, or I'll send you back home. My words were firm.
Yes, Milady. He bowed his head and walked back over to the others.
“It's time we go now.” Acacia rose from her throne and came and stood next to Mike. As beautiful a couple they were, I knew that Acacia had a darkness inside of her- and it made me want to hurt her.
We followed them to the caverns below the school. I was tempted to try and let Leland wander around and find those alternate routes, but his emotions were too raw- too much could go wrong.
The room was a giant rock cavern. There were marble supports put in, but other than that it was very primitive. It was also freezing- even to my vampire blood. As we stepped further into the room, we were searched for weapons. Both Dom and I had nothing taken. The Boys had their surface weapons taken. I was very curious about where they still had weapons.
In the middle of the room- which was already full of people- was a large wooden platform. Two tables and a smaller raised area with a chair on it were also part of it. I saw Kelly standing with the people pushed against the platform. She smiled kindly at me.
Dominic and I were told to sit at the head of one table, our men were to stand behind us. I didn't like the openness of the position. Acacia sat at the head of the other table, Mike sat in the seat closest to us. Several more wolves came and sat at both tables.
I heard the chain scrap before I saw her being brought in. Issy's head was down. I could see the tear streaks down her cheeks. My heart filled with hurt and anger. I took a deep breath and pushed them away. Once she was positioned on the chair, the tribunal opened up.
“For the sake of our guests, this tribunal will be held in English. Tonight we come together to pass judgment on, Isabella DeDominico, for the death of our beloved Jack.” Acacia's words boomed around the room.
A soft growl and gentle howl seemed to bounce off the walls afterwards.
“The vampires are here to offer her innocence.” She continued.
A real hiss erupted from the people below us.
“It has been in our traditions...” I zoned out on Acacia's spiel.
I let my mind search through the minds in the room. I was looking for information that would help save Issy. There was a hum in the room that I was having a hard time pinpointing.
Dom elbowed me gently.
“We will bring this to a vote.” Acacia continued.
“Wait, we were there the night Isabella supposedly killed Jack.” The words were out of my mouth before I had time to think.
“Can you provide any evidence that has not already been shown?” She asked.
I looked at Dom, he shook his head.
“No.” The humming continued to bug me.
Where have I felt that before? I mentally searched for the source of the feeling.
“Then it's up to the tribunal to decide her innocence or guilt.” If I wasn't mistaken I could see Acacia enjoying her position.
“Vote, vote, vote!” The crowd took up the chant.
“To the vote it is.” She offered it to the tribunal. “Those in favor of a death for a death, say aye.”
Of the eight werewolves present, five said 'aye'.
“Those opposed?”
Three 'nays' were spoken.
“The majority rules, death to Isabella DeDominico.” Acacia ruled.
“No!” Our entire party shouted and launched itself at Issy, landing around her in protection.
The humming grew louder and more present.
“If you stand between us and our sentence, then you too will die.” Acacia's eyes gleamed in delight.
“No, this is not the way.” Mike said and came to stand by us.
“You dare go against your people, Michael O'Shanold?” There was fire in her eyes.
“Aye, for what's right. I will.” Mike's words were sure.
I realized that I knew that hum from Issy's mind. It came from the spell the witches had put in her. That meant...
“The killer is in this room. I can prove it!” I shouted.
A large gasp rocked the room, and then I heard the charge of magic as I pinpointed its source.
One word floated around my mind before the darkness took hold of me.
Kelly...
