Epilogue

image

Summer stood beside Lyn in the master bedroom of Snowed Inn Bed and Breakfast and marveled at the eternal beauty of this winter bride. Lyn’s long-sleeved white satin gown boasted fur at the wrists and over the neckline. The corset style waist belled to a generous double peplum skirt edged in white lace embroidery highlighted by tiny red rosettes.

Lyn glowed with happiness and clasped her hands in front of her as if already wearing the fur muff that would complete the ensemble. “Well?”

“Perfect,” she answered honestly. “Doug’s going to fall in love all over again the minute he sees you.”

Her smile nearly blinding, Lyn sighed her relief. “So, what’s next for you?”

“On Monday, I fly to New York for the finishing touches on Duchess DeeLight’s secret nuptials.”

At their first meeting, when Daphne Beech had explained how the pop star wanted no possibility the press would discover her wedding plans until after she’d said I do, Summer had convinced the professional assistant that holding the event in New York would throw everyone off the trail. So far she’d been successful in keeping the press from discovering that the Sands-Harrison wedding scheduled for the Plaza next week was actually for Duchess DeeLight and her longtime companion, film star Trent Dolby.

“That’s not what I mean, and you know it,” Lyn huffed. “I’m talking about you and Craig. It’s been long enough, don’t you think? When are you going to put that poor man out of his misery?”

“Actually, I was thinking about making our engagement official tonight. If you don’t mind.”

“Mind?” Lyn clapped and hopped like a child, skirts rustling with each bounce. “I think it’s a perfect idea!”

ONE FLOOR BELOW THE master bedroom in the parlor, Craig pulled April into a quiet corner beside the gaily decorated Christmas tree. “I want to show you what I bought Summer for Christmas.” He took a bright blue velvet box from his pocket and flipped the top to reveal a heart-shaped sapphire ring with square ruby ingots on each side.

April touched the gold band, smiled as the white lights of the tree glinted off the brightly colored gems. “Beautiful.” She offered him a conspiratorial smile. “Does this mean what I think it means?”

“I want to make our engagement official tonight, after your sister’s ceremony. Do you think Lyn and Doug will mind?”
