Pine Cone
The story of the Pine Cone design is a serendipitous tale of rejection and, ultimately, triumph. The pattern was designed by Frank Ferrel in the early 1900s, but variations were rejected by both Weller and Peters & Reed potteries as unworkable. A sample was also rejected by Roseville, and it languished for years until a Roseville salesman, Charles Snyder, became convinced of its marketability in 1931. The rest is history, and by some estimates, more than 150 styles were created. On backgrounds of blue, orange-brown-tan, or green, it features small ovoid cones with long pine needles on irregular-shaped branches, which may also form the handles of a given piece. In exceedingly rare instances, a pink background may be found. Sometimes unmarked, pieces bear marks that are both raised and impressed, and foil labels are also found. (A late-1940s version with a glossy finish is known as Pine Cone II or Modern.)
