Thanksgiving at the Beach

It’s often still warm enough in November at Tybee to take a long walk along the shore after stuffing ourselves, or if we’re in Atlanta, to at least have appetizers outside—along with televised football games, of course. Wherever we are reminding ourselves of our many blessings, we do this holiday as a family potluck. Tom and his nephews each make dueling turkeys—we like ours brined and oven-roasted, because that method guarantees maximum gravy output. Zack and Alex usually deep-fry theirs in peanut oil. My sister-in-law Jeanne is the appetizer queen. Bacon-kissed green beans are another mandated menu item, as is my boozy bourbon sweet potato soufflé. The list of desserts our family devours at every holiday is truly embarrassing, but suffice it to say we always have Andy’s pumpkin pie, augmented by pecan pie.
