elena had known of some secret passageways or they would never have gotten into the castle. Once inside, they had parted into their two groups. Helena took point but Demetrius wasn’t going to argue over it. She clearly had more skills in this arena than he did.
Liam said behind him in a soft voice, “She is a fine woman.”
Demetrius glanced over his shoulder, surprised by the young man’s words. He raised an eyebrow for Liam to elaborate.
He must have understood as Liam said, “Smart, good looking and she can kick some serious ass.”
Demetrius looked back at Helena. She had already taken out a few soldiers who had been protecting the secret tunnels. She hadn’t even broken a sweat.
Helena said without looking back, “You two keep it down.” She motioned them to follow her as she ducked down a corridor.
Helena was also on point because she knew where Puck’s lab was. Hara had said they had found it but hadn’t known how to get there from the secret tunnels.
Helena suddenly ran and Demetrius realised there were two guards outside Puck’s lab. Demetrius rushed to help her but she had already disabled one and was engaged with the other. Demetrius watched her with awe.
Liam said, “One awesome lady.”
Helena finished with her man and said to Liam, “Thanks for the compliment. Now be careful. The engineer will have something planned for us.”
Liam grinned. “So do I.”
Liam stepped up to the door. He took a few things out of his pocket and opened his canteen. He poured water over the balls and they bubbled. He then crouched and rolled the small balls under the door and stood up.
Helena frowned and asked, “What was that?”
“Gas in small balls. They will react to the water I just poured on them and fill the area around the door with smoke and gas. We should be able to go through soon.”
Liam then stepped back and gave the door a hearty kick, which slammed it open. Helena rushed in through the smoke.
Demetrius looked at Liam. “You are full of surprises.”
Liam grinned wider. “I learnt from the best.”
Liam pulled out two guns and followed Helena. Demetrius, not to be outdone, also rushed into the room. There was only one light left in the large cavernous room, making it hard to make out anything. There were screams and yells so Demetrius knew there were more men in the room than just the engineer. Demetrius stayed near the door where the light came in from the corridor so they could see if anyone tried to escape.
A man dashed forward and Demetrius kicked out his leg, taking the man in the gut. He went down with an oomph and Demetrius danced on his feet, feeling the adrenaline from taking down his first man.
Helena yelled. “Down!”
Demetrius wasn’t sure who she was talking to so he shifted aside. He jumped when he realised someone had come up behind him. He fumbled with his gun in its holster but before he could even bring it up; the man grew a knife in his throat. The surprise on the man’s face was grotesque as blood spurted out of the wound on his neck. Demetrius glanced over his shoulder to briefly glimpse Helena in the light with her hand now empty of a knife. But she moved back into the shadows, fighting other men.
Demetrius turned back to the man, who had now slumped to the floor. Helena had just saved his life. How was he supposed to be the hero when Helena was always saving him?
