Twin Blessings
I have always felt especially blessed to have my own best friend, my twin sister, Laura, by my side throughout my life. As children, we were together constantly—we ate, bathed, played, and slept together. We shared the same family, hobbies, and friends. And although we are fraternal twins, and look nothing alike, our shared childhood experiences formed a bond like no other.
I can still remember us walking hand in hand on our first day of kindergarten: up the tree-lined street two blocks and around the curve to our neighborhood school. I remember that Laura and I initially skipped up the street, feeling giddy and pretty in our new, matching dresses. However, as the school got closer, our gaits slowed, and we became more anxious about being separated. I remember squeezing her hand tight as we approached the school entrance, feeling pangs of sweet love and security that my twin, my best friend, was with me, that I was not alone. I also remember realizing that after school we would lock hands again and together walk happily home.
Life carries on, and at times thousands of miles have separated Laura and me. However, I will be forever comforted by that same feeling of sweet security that has remained in my heart all these years, no matter the distance between us. Our loved ones are always with us, a mere hand squeeze away in our memories. And someday we will walk happily hand in hand together all the way Home.
Eat pie, love life.
