The following is a list of texts and speeches that have been revised in the making of this book:
“The Anthropocene” is a combination of two essays: the first initially appeared in English under the same title in Ashkan Sepahvand, Christoph Rosol, Bernd M. Scherer (eds.), Textures of the Anthropocene: Grain Vapor Ray (Cambridge, MA and London: MIT Press, 2015); the second is drawn from a lecture, “Wie groß ist groß?,” given in December 2009 during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (published in Das Raumschiff Erde hat keinen Notausgang [Suhrkamp: Berlin, 2011]).
“From the Domestication of the Human Being to the Civilizing of Cultures” was a lecture delivered on October 11, 2010, in Warsaw under the title Die Domestikation des Menschen und die Expansion der Solidaritäten.
“What Happened in the 20th Century?” was the Inaugural Lecture for the Emmanuel Lévinas Chair in Strasburg on March 4, 2005.
“The Thinker in the Haunted Castle” was the opening address for the International Symposium Derrida’s Ghosts in Naples on October 7, 2009.
“Deep Observation” first appeared in Geo 9 (2008), 147ff.
“The Persistent Renaissance” was a lecture delivered in Florence on May 25, 2013.
“Heidegger’s Politics: Postponing the End of History” was a lecture given at the Heidegger Conference le danger et la promesse in Strasburg on December 5, 2005.
“Odysseus the Sophist” was a lecture given on the occasion of Ruhrfestspiele 2009.
“Almost Sacred Text” first appeared in Das Grundgesetz (Gütersloh/Munich: Wissenmedia in der Inmedia-ONE, 2012).
“The Other Logos, or The Reason of Cunning” first appeared in Achim Hecker, Klaus Kammerer, Bernd Schauenberg, Harro von Senger (eds.), Regel und Abweichung: Strategie und Strategeme. Chinesische Listenlehre im interdisziplinären Dialog (Berlin: Munster, 2008).
