Q:

70. Why do we go to church?

A:

When you trusted Jesus to be your Savior, God made you part of the church. No, he didn’t turn you into a brick. He made you a member of what the Bible calls the “body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13, 26-27). He joined you to a huge group—all of Jesus’ followers from around the world.

You probably get together often with part of that group—the church family that attends worship services in your local church building. We need each other! The Holy Spirit gives each of us a job to do to help each other grow closer to Jesus. He gives us jobs like serving, encouraging, giving, teaching, and leading (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11). And just like your body doesn’t work well without all its parts, the body of Christ (the church) doesn’t work well unless each of us joins in!

What happens to a coal that rolls away from a campfire and stays by itself?

We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others.
