Chapter 12

Jonathan

Bruh, something is bothering Serenity,” I said to my twin brother late one evening, as we were finishing up some paperwork for another business prospect in the office.

Knight and Knight was taking off by leaps and bounds.

It was the best decision to go into business with my brother, I thought silently as I watched a crease form between his brows that were so like mine in every way.

Knight and Knight was officially on the map in several cities now. Our business was expanding and so were our bank accounts. We were both happy to contribute toward rebuilding a delicate economy by hiring some of the best employees around.

What’s wrong with Serenity?” Jason finally asked as he avoided looking into my eyes. His eyes stayed glued to the contract on his desk.

Bruh, that’s the million-dollar question that I wished that I had an answer to.”

Do you think she’s sick or anything?” Jason asked in a quiet, controlled tone of voice.

No, she isn’t sick, but she gets this faraway look in her eyes at times. Whenever I question her about it, she just gives me the same answer. She said that her job has her stressed. I always tell her to stop worrying because I’m her man now and I have her back no matter what happens with her job. She can even quit her job, I would love to take care of her,” I stated.

Jason became abnormally quiet. I could feel something had changed in the atmosphere when I brought up Serenity’s name. I looked at him hard as his head stayed bowed and his eyes stayed glued on the contract in front of him. I had a serious dilemma going on about my woman, and my brother wasn’t paying me any attention.

What the hell is wrong with him? I thought silently to myself.

So, I decided to change the subject.

Jason, are you hearing anything that I said to you?”

I’m sorry, man. My mind seems to be all over the place this evening. What did you just say?”

I asked if you and Emma-Jay would like to come over this weekend. Serenity has never met her. Maybe meeting Emma will lift her spirits.”

Let me check with Emma first before I make a commitment,” he said as if he was trying to stall coming over to my house.

Ever since Serenity and I had grown close, Jason had been playing ghost. He used to stay at my house or I at his, all the time. The closer I grew to Serenity, seemed like the further away I grew from my identical twin brother. I’ve got to make more of an effort to bring us back closer together. I mulled these thoughts around in my head.

You do that and let me know what you and Emma decide,” I finally spoke.

I will do that,” he replied, slowly.

I sifted through the last of my stack of contracts before setting them aside. “I need to go pick up my baby. I promised to take her out to dinner tonight,” I said. I stood and I gathered my briefcase. “Don’t work too hard, bruh. We can finish these contracts tomorrow,” I looked over at Jason’s bent head.

Go pick up Serenity and don’t worry about me. I will catch you later,” Jason muttered. I had the feeling as if he wanted me to leave.

Okay, Jason. If you want to talk about what’s bothering you, you know where to find me,” I said and walked out the door.

I shifted my brother and his attitude aside, and thought of my sweet Serenity. The woman who had stolen my heart and had become my peace. She brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart. I hurried to my SUV. I couldn’t wait to lay my eyes on her beautiful face once again.
