Scene Four
Bristol has been running wildly along the docks, trying to escape what she knows. She collapses into the fetal position and holds herself tight. Bristol has a vision/nightmare: As she lies there, water begins to rise up until it touches the docks, then further, ’til it covers the docks, then further, ’til it begins to cover Bristol. She is able to scream once.
BRISTOL: No!
(Dark Shapes, that we thought were a part of the docks, rise up—inhuman shapes. The Shadow appears just as a chair descends on chains from the air. The Dark Shapes put The Shadow into the chair. The Dark Shapes bind her wrists and ankles to the chair. Now Bristol dreams of her aunt’s drowning.
At first, her aunt is raised up in the chair, over the dock. Bristol herself feels the terror of drowning, while The Shadow is completely motionless throughout, showing no emotion.
Then The Shadow/Bristol’s aunt is lowered down into the water. Bristol relives her aunt’s terror and death, struggling hard to breathe, struggling against invisible ropes.
We hear the wild sounds of the ocean. When Bristol’s aunt is high up, swinging in the chair, the rope is cut and the chair falls into the ocean. Bristol screams as the chair plunges into the ocean. Everything goes black.)
