Part 4

Common Beneficial Insects and Their Kin

This section will help you recognize important groups of beneficial insects that can be found on farms. You will also find information on their natural history, life cycles, and conservation needs. Recognizing beneficial insects during their various life stages can be a challenge. Some groups undergo incomplete metamorphosis, a gradual, simple transition from egg to nymph to adult (see Comparing Metamorphoses). Nymphs frequently resemble smaller versions of adults, though they have no wings and cannot reproduce yet. Other groups undergo complete metamorphosis, developing from egg to larva to pupa to adult. Insect larvae in these groups often look very different from adults and have different habitat needs. You may readily recognize some groups, while it may take time to become familiar with others.

Lady beetle larvae are adept predators of aphids and other pest insects.
