WE ARE CURRENTLY unable to provide education for our high school students here at Huruma, so once our children graduate from junior high we transfer them to another educational facility. Some of our youths are currently attending boarding schools, while others have stayed local. The transfer they receive depends upon the grades they’ve achieved. In faith, Huruma provides funding for their education through donations received.
It was during a school board meeting that I was contacted by one of the schools being attended by several Huruma youths. I was informed that, if I could not pay their tuition immediately, the Huruma youths would be expelled from the school. Unfortunately, last we had checked, the Huruma Trust Fund account did not have enough money to even purchase detergent for the children to clean their clothes. But acting in faith, I told the school representative to come and pick up a check.
Immediately after ending the phone conversation, all I could do was laugh and exclaim, “Oh God, help me!”
In Kenya, it is considered a criminal offence for any individual to write a check when their account funds are insufficient. This crime is not taken lightly; anyone reported will receive three years in jail. I had no idea what would happen to the Huruma Children’s Home if I were to be jailed for three years. I had taken a risk, yes, but I remained faithful that God would provide. I truly believe, as I have always believed, in the importance of education. These children have already had a rough start in life; I believe that education plays an important role in helping them develop. I did not want our youths to be removed from the educational institution.
A representative from the high school arrived, and I unhesitatingly handed him a large check to cover the tuition fees for five Huruma youths.
The very next day we received a small amount of money from volunteers who were staying with us at the time. As my husband went to deposit the funds, he also happened to check the balance of the Huruma Trust Fund. I praise God, for He had provided for us; we had received a very large donation. We did not need to worry about there not being enough funds within our account, and I did not need to worry about being jailed!
