Bubble Trouble

Grab

½ cup of liquid dish soap

4 cups of bottled or distilled water

2 tablespoons of glycerin or light corn syrup

Plastic cups

Wire coat hanger

Plastic straws

Rubber bands

Large jar or container

Go

In a large jar or container, gently mix together the dish soap, water, and glycerin or corn syrup. Let the bubble solution stand for several hours—your bubbles will last longer.

Have fun creating bubble-blowing tools together. Cut the bottom from plastic cups to make rings. Bend a wire coat hanger to make a large circle. (For safety, you may wish to wrap the ends of the wire with duct tape.) Cluster several straws together and wrap them with rubber bands to hold them together. Let your daughter gather a variety of items such as slotted spoons, the plastic rings that hold soda cans together, or plastic funnels.

Put on some play clothes and head outdoors to create bubble mania! See how many tiny bubbles you can make at one time. Or create the largest, longest-lasting bubble you possibly can. Experiment with catching bubbles with wet hands or with soft gloves on, or try to pass them back and forth between you. Blow as many bubbles as you can at once, and try to pop them all in the air before they reach the ground.

Grow

Isn’t it interesting that despite the variety of tools you used to create the bubbles, each one came out in exactly the same shape? No matter the method, you get clear, shiny spheres every time.

The Word of God says the same thing about God’s people: true faith looks the same in all of us despite our individuality. First John 4:7 says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God” (ESV). All of God’s true children show love.

Tell your daughter how you have observed her love for you and others through her words and behavior this past week. Share a memory of when you felt her love through a gift or other special expression. Where have you seen her concern and compassion for others? Share these observations with your daughter and express how beautiful her loving heart is to you. And of course, end your time together with an “I love you” of your own.

Dear loving Father,

Thank you for loving us no matter what. Help us to never doubt how high and wide and deep your love for us really is. Please give us loving hearts for everyone around us every day. Thank you for my daughter’s caring heart—you have blessed me through her in a thousand ways. Amen.
