Travel to a park or rural location where street lights are at a minimum. Meteors are best viewed in as dark a setting as possible. Find an open area with a clear view of the sky to spread out your blankets. Get comfortable!

Relax and keep your eyes on the skies above. Enjoy the excitement with your daughter of spotting the beautiful “shooting stars” as they appear. If the timing is right you may be treated to quite a show, so keep count of how many you see.

Enjoy some cold drinks and snacks as you talk about Abraham’s night of watching the stars with God.

Genesis 15 tells the story of how, on one starry night, the Lord God brought Abraham out to look at the sky with him. He challenged Abraham to count the stars if he was able. God then made an amazing promise to Abraham: his family would one day number as many as the stars in the night sky.

That was an unbelievable promise for a man who didn’t even have a single child! In fact, he and his wife were so old that having children was impossible. Yet even though it seemed too miraculous to believe, Abraham trusted God. As the story unfolds in Scripture, we see that God kept his promise and created a whole nation of people from Abraham’s family. The most wonderful part of the story is that our Savior, Jesus Christ, was born into the world as a member of that family.

God promises us that if we put our trust in Jesus we are adopted into his family. Whenever we look at the stars we can remember God’s plan for Abraham—and for us—to belong to the family of God forever.

Dear Father,

Thank you for your promises and that nothing is impossible for you. We are so thankful that just as you made Abraham and his children a part of your family, you have invited us to be your children too. Thank you that every time we look at the stars in the sky, we can remember that we are part of your forever family. Amen!
