5. Comic Book Illustration

Unless one is working on a personal or self-initiated project, the comic book artist will usually work with a team of artists, each providing their own specialty to the final comic. One person might pencil the drawings, another may ink the final art, while yet another colors the scenes, etc. The comic book field, however, covers much more ground than the stereotypical “superhero” genre. There are fiction and non-fiction graphic novels, comic books for the education field, children’s comic books, and even comic books designed to sell products or promote public issues. In the more commercial applications of comic book art, the artist will also be working with design and writing teams as opposed to having the sole hand in creating the final work. Artists interested in comic books should look far beyond the superhero market and research the variety of other possibilities that exist in this market.
