Marine biology art is an exceptionally particular branch of the biological illustration field—similar in that it has to do with biology, but unique in its specialization of organisms and life forms that exist in aquatic environments. Studies of marine life in coral reefs, tide pools, thermal vents, and ecosystems thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface are but a glimpse of the habitats studied by marine biologists.
Artists are a valuable necessity to this research work as their creative vision and craft enables the invisible, microcosmic worlds of the deep to come to life in representations of those mysteries. In addition to the obvious technical journals and educational manuals on this subject, surprisingly two of the biggest patrons of marine biology art are the gift and children’s markets. Aquatic t-shirts, mugs, posters, puzzles, coloring books, toys, and many other varieties of children’s marine biology products entertain as well as educate the young about important environmental issues.
