40. Illustrated Lettering

Illustrated lettering can easily be confused with the design field of typography, but the needs of an illustrator beyond that of a typographer are quite evident in today’s commercial fields. There is a demand for “illustrated” letterforms that do not exist as separate computer fonts. Illustrated lettering is incorporated into the adaptation of names or logo identities, and into signature graphic icons for clients and products. Applications include food and drink labels, film and play titles, logos, poster graphics, etc. There is also an enormous demand for creative lettering in the licensing industry for print sales, products, gift-wraps, and much more. This field has a long history, but remains wide open for the illustrator who is an excellent graphic artist, careful craftsperson, and intricate delineator.
