Jamestown Avenue

FINISHED QUILT SIZE: 38˝ × 8˝

Linda grew up on Jamestown Avenue in Tulsa, and all of the houses on the street were different from each other. The house across the street from her sat on acreage with lots of trees. She loved seeing the leaves change color in the fall.

This small quilt is perfect to use over a doorway or on a table.

Cutting

WOF = width of fabric

Block background fabric

Cut felted wool in various sizes and construct a rectangle 10˝ × 40˝ for the block background. Use a ¼˝ seam allowance. Press the seams open gently, using a pressing cloth.

The following are the sizes Linda cut and pieced together, from left to right:

8¼˝ × 10˝, 8½˝ × 10˝, 10˝ × 14½˝, 10˝ × 10¼˝

Grass fabric

Cut 1 strip 2˝ × 40¾˝.

Binding

Cut 1 square 20˝ × 20˝ to make a 2½˝-wide continuous bias strip 120˝ long for the binding (see Continuous Bias Binding).

Quilt Assembly

Refer to General Appliqué Instructions as needed. Seam allowances are ¼˝.

1.Make templates and overlays for the block using the Jamestown Avenue patterns.

2.Sew together background pieces and press the seams open. Linda used felted wool, but you can use any fabric you like for the quilt.

3.A felted wool background is too thick to press in half horizontally and vertically. Instead, fold the background in half and draw a ¼˝-long line at each edge of the background to mark the horizontal and vertical centerlines. Place the background on your design wall.

4.Refer to Preparing to Stitch to choose fabrics, fuse the fusible web to all the felted wool appliqués, and cut them out.

5.Place the appliqué pieces on the background on your design wall. Use the overlay to place the appliqué pieces in the proper position, or place them by eye. Play with color and fabric choices until you are happy with the way the block looks.

6.Fuse and appliqué the block. Select your appliqué stitch from Stitches for Appliquéing with Felted Wool. Refer to Appliqué with Attitude on Cotton to stitch the ground to the background.

7.When the appliqué is complete, embroider the insides and outsides of the windows and around the doors using a stem stitch and wool thread.

8.Press the quilt on the wrong side, and trim it to 8½˝ × 38½˝.

9.Layer and baste the quilt. Quilt by hand or machine, and bind. Refer to Finishing Techniques.
