Acknowledgments
I thank my family and friends for encouragement and support, especially my husband, Charles, who does much more than go over my work with his red pencil. For lending me Aunt Alice Bryant’s book The Sun Was Darkened, a chronicle of her years interned with my uncle Will in Santo Tomás, I thank my cousin Imogene Williams, their daughter and my heroine at age seven, who lived with us during those years and introduced me to “yummy gookums.” And, finally, I acknowledge Sofia Adamson’s book Gods, Angels, Pearls and Roses, which allowed me insight into the city of Manila during those dark days.
