Champagne Moments

ALISON MITCHELL: It’s hugs and handshakes all round and the tears are flowing for many of the side, who have worked so long and so hard to achieve this … We can hear now from Player of the Match, Nicky Shaw.

NICKY SHAW: I started the day crying, and I finished the day crying.

Later Alison spoke to England captain Charlotte Edwards …

CHARLOTTE EDWARDS: It’s an amazing feeling to be world champions – it didn’t matter how we got there as long as we got over the line. We told the girls they had to take their opportunities and Nicky has done that today with four wickets and seeing us home. I don’t think it will sink in for a while, but this is a special moment and we’ll remember this for the rest of our lives.

CHRISTOPHER MARTIN JENKINS: Swann in again from the Vauxhall End. And that bites … he’s caught at short leg! And it’s Swann who’s taken the final wicket, and Hussey, the hero of Australia, who’s out. Hussey doesn’t like the decision … but England now shaking hands with him. It was Cook who took the final catch. It’s all over. England have regained the Ashes, after losing them so humiliatingly 5-0 in Australia only two years ago. Australia all out for 348 on a golden evening at The Oval.

England’s Stuart Broad had just taken the wicket of M. S. Dhoni when Henry Blofeld came to the microphone.

HENRY BLOFELD: Well, it’s Broad now who’s going to bowl to Harbajhan Singh, the new batsman. Three slips, a gully, a backward point and a forward short leg. Here comes Broad, he’s in, he bowls to Harbajhan … oh, he must be out, he is! Lbw! He’s gone first ball! It got him on the crease and he was absolutely plumb in front! And, goodness me, the celebrations are tremendous … Broad’s now on a hat-trick. Kumar has come in. We have four slips and two gullies and a forward short leg. Here’s Broad just listen to the noise – he’s up to the wicket … and he’s bowled him! He’s bowled him! He’s taken a hat-trick! It’s fantastic! Broad hit his off stump and Kumar is out. Three wickets in three balls, 273 for 8 and isn’t it absolutely fantastic? It was an absolute humdinger of a ball – a beauty!
