Chapter Fourteen

Back at the compound, Kat was getting stronger with each passing day. Jake would read to her and challenge her to games of chess. She was very good, but couldn’t remember how she ever learned how to play. She was amazed by the things her brain chose to remember and the things that it insisted on forgetting. Although, the doctor still anticipated a full recovery.

“It will just take some time,” everyone kept saying to her. It was so frustrating because it felt like time was the one thing that she didn’t have.  Ryan came in shortly after the doctor had left and asked if she felt up to talking.

“Sure,” she answered, sitting up in bed a little more.

“Kat, you are a CIA, deep undercover agent. You have been working this assignment with the pirates for two years—mostly in Somalia. You had been off the grid for three months before my team got a hold of you. We took the ship that you were being held on with Jessica. Does any of this trigger anything in you?”

“Only the part about Jessica. I remember her.”

“As soon as the doctor gives you the okay, your CIA case leader will come down to brief you on the details of your mission over the last two years. We’re hopeful that it will spark some memories for you.”

“I am hopeful too.”

Back in D.C., Carl Radford was heading for a meeting with Absame Kubal. Every minute the man spent in this country placed him in jeopardy. The name Absame translated to ‘the great one’ and he very much tried to live up to the name. He was head of one of the largest terrorist organizations in the world.

“Carl, my friend, please tell me that you have found my woman,” Absame said, shaking Carl’s hand before they sat down.

“Yes, she is alive, but she has no memory of us at all.”

“Carl, I will be clear...I want her dead.”

“She was rescued by a team of total Black Ops. I don’t have clearance, and therefore no access to her. They said that they will let me see her as soon as the doctor treating her gives the okay. We just need to be patient. Try not to worry, Absame. I will make sure she never remembers.”

“Make sure that you do, otherwise your life will replace hers, my friend.”

“Understood,” Carl acknowledged as a chill ran down his spine. Kat had been one of the greatest assets the CIA had ever recruited. Unfortunately, she had been too good at her job. He hated the fact that he had to kill her. She had become like a daughter to him. But, when it came down to her life versus his, the choice became much easier.
