Swimming, snorkeling, and SCUBA diving are popular pastimes best done on the islands of Santa Barbara, Anacapa, and Eastern Santa Cruz. These activities are allowed at San Miguel and Santa Rosa Islands, but should only be attempted by individuals who are properly trained, conditioned, and equipped. This recommendation is issued because of consistently strong winds and rough waters typical of these two islands. There are many fantastic swimming, snorkeling, and SCUBA diving locations around the other three islands. The water is clear with massive curtains of kelp. However, it’s possible to see what’s under the water without getting wet. During the summer, divers equipped with a video camera plunge into Landing Cove (East Anacapa). High and dry, visitors can not only see the kelp forests, sea stars, and Garibaldi through the eye of the camera, but they can ask the divers questions using a voice communication system. Video monitors are located at Anacapa’s dock and the mainland visitor center in Ventura.
Dolphins and whales are often spotted swimming the waters surrounding the Channel Islands. Island Packersoffers seasonal whale watching and wildlife viewing boat trips. Condor Express offers similar expeditions. Private boaters are also welcome to explore the waters, but the Marine Mammal Protection Act stipulates that boats must remain at least 100 yards away from whales (unless they approach you, then turn off your engine).
Private boaters have an easier time reaching the north shores of San Miguel and Santa Rosa Islands, where you’ll find the best surfing on the islands. Sail Channel Islands provides a sailing school and charter services (half-day, 6 passengers, $850).
