Channel Islands offers one designated campground on each island. All campgrounds are located at least a half mile (usually uphill) from the boat landing area. Campers must bring their own water and carry all trash off the island. Campfires are not permitted. Pit toilets are available. Wind breaks are provided at Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Island Campgrounds. Camping costs $15 per night per site and reservations must be made in advance by calling (877) 444-6777 or clicking www.recreation.gov.
Backcountry camping is available year-round on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands. Del Norte campsite, near Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island, is available for backcountry camping all year. It’s a 3.5-mile hike from Prisoners Harbor and 12 miles from Scorpion Anchorage. Reservations are required ($15/night) and can be made by calling (877) 444-6777 or clicking www.recreation.gov. Backpackers are also allowed to camp on Santa Rosa’s beaches from mid-August until the end of December. Reservations for beach camping are free and must be made in advance by calling the park at (805) 658-5711.
Ferries usually fill before campgrounds, so it is wise to book your transportation (if required) prior to your camping reservations.
