Backpacking (LAVO)

Lassen Volcanic National Park hosts 150 miles of trails including 17 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. This modest network provides ample backpacking opportunities. All overnight trips in the backcountry require a free wilderness permit, available in person during operating hours at Loomis Museum, Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, and by self-registration at Summit Lake, Juniper Lake, Butte Lake, and Warner Valley Ranger Stations. Permits are also available over the phone at (530) 595-4480, through the mail, and by fax. Reservation forms and complete contact information are available at the park website. Forms must be received at least two weeks in advance. Before filling out the reservation form call (530) 595-4480 for information about areas of the park that are closed to camping. Backpackers must camp at least 300-feet from other groups, 100-feet from streams and lakes, and at least 0.5-mile from any developed area.
