Mount Rainier has plenty to offer those looking to get deeper into the park’s wilderness. The Pacific Crest Trail skirts the eastern boundary and Wonderland Trail covers 93 miles as it circles around Mount Rainier. These are the two most notable long-distance hiking trails in the park, but you’ll find designated campsites throughout the backcountry. Begin planning your backcountry trip with a good topographical map.
Backpackers must obtain a wilderness camping permit (required for all overnight stays in the backcountry). Permits can be obtained two ways: reservation (70% of total, $20 per party, 1 – 12 people per party) or first-come, first-served (remaining 30%, free). Reservations for the current summer are accepted beginning March 15. They are only accepted by mail, fax, or in person. Visit the park website for the reservation request form and contact information. Reservations are highly recommended if you plan on backpacking in July or August.
First-come, first-served permits can be obtained no earlier than one day before your departure date. In summer, permits are available at the following facilities: Longmire Wilderness Information Center, Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise, Ohanapecosh Visitor Center, White River Wilderness Information Center, Sunrise Visitor Center, and Carbon River Ranger Station. In winter, permits are only available at Longmire Museum and Jackson Visitor Center. Plan on arriving at least one hour before the facility closes.
