The main draw is the coastal redwoods, the world’s tallest trees soaring more than 300 feet above their massive bases, but there’s much more to the region’s lush ecosystem. The park protects a variety of threatened species: brown pelican, tidewater goby, bald eagle, Chinook salmon, northern spotted owl, and Steller sea lion. Large mammals such as bear and Roosevelt elk are commonly seen. Elk cross the roads, use the trails, and appear to be domesticated, but don’t mistake their docile nature as an invitation to pose in a photograph with them. All of the animals are wild and should be treated with respect. Do not feed, provoke, or approach any native wildlife.
