How To Proceed
Before we proceed, you need to understand that just as good memory is a learned habit, bad memory is also a learned habit. In fact, our everyday life motivates and teaches us to forget rather than remember most of the time. This habit then becomes part of our entire process and management of thinking.
The bulk of the information that goes into our brain every day is of no permanent use. I guess that more than 99.99% of ingoing information belongs to this category. This included the bulk of the news we hear, read, see. This also includes the names, faces, and people whom we meet. We never need this information a second time, or even a few seconds after, and therefore the brain needs to simply forget it a few moments after seeing, reading, or hearing it. This develops into an automatic habit. That is why we do not have to consciously forget anything. Rather, automatically forgetting information is inbuilt into our brains, which is reinforced in everyday life.
We need to remember that the twentieth century, with offset printing, cheap mass-produced newspapers, paper-backs, information flyers in everything big or small, TV, and then the internet has created an exponential increase in the information that comes to us each day. Most of this information is useless. This means that our need, ability, and unconscious training to forget information has also been increasing exponentially. There lies the problem. The more our brain learns to forget in quantity and speed, the more our brain becomes tuned to forget and not to remember. Herein lies the main problem today to a super memory power. If our brains spend more than 99.99 of its time and energy to forget, and if it keeps devising strategies to ignore the bulk of the information that comes to us each day, you can imagine what is bound to happen. And it is happening every day in our lives.
The first step in developing a super memory is, therefore, to overcome this habit of learnt, deliberate, unconscious forgetting. This is done with the help of deliberate, conscious, selection of essential information for retention. Then you will have to learn just a few techniques to remember this selected information. A few exercises to retrieve information at will add to this process and enhance the process of developing a super memory.
