Here’s a lineup of the cast of characters used throughout my book. Even though these pieces are being manufactured today and are readily available for purchase, a good percentage of our recipes use either a skillet or a Dutch oven. If not, a skillet or a Dutch oven can work with a little bit of can-do ingenuity.

Here’s the thing about cast iron. It’s romantic. It’s bold. It’s a statement about life the way it should be. Loading a vintage cast-iron bed onto the bed of your farm truck for a romantic getaway in the middle of a field doesn’t work if dinner doesn’t involve cast-iron cookware and a campfire. When I cook with cast iron in my kitchen, I feel the same way—romantic, emboldened, and somehow defiantly in charge of safeguarding the memory of those before me who, even in the hardest of times, mustered the effort to turn life into a romp.
