Among the first reviewers of the book were Stefan Zweig and Walther Rathenau, who reviewed it in the same year under the heading “A Good Book.” In a letter to Hesse in 1918, Rathenau wrote: “The first and only book review which I have ever written … concerned your book Peter Camenzind, The editor thought at the time that it was of service to the book, and I hope this was the case”
