219  The grave of Hermann Hesse and Ninon Hesse: “Grief and lamentation are our first, natural response to the loss of a beloved person. They help us through the first mourning and loss, but they do not suffice to link us with the deceased. That is done on the primitive level by the cult of death: the sacrifices, grave decorations, monuments, flowers. On our level, however, the sacrifice must take place in our own souls through memory, through the most detailed recollection, the reconstruction of the beloved’s being within our own. If we are able to accomplish that, then the deceased remains close to us, his image is preserved and helps us to make grief productive.” (Letter)
