It was common practice for carriers joining the Pacific Fleet to act as aircraft ferries on the way out, sometimes carrying land-based aircraft which would be craned on and off the deck. Seen here off the California coast on 20 February 1945, USS Intrepid (CV-11) shows a very crowded flight deck, which includes sixteen twin-engined PV-2 patrol planes, with her own air group disposed forward and in amongst them.
