Acknowledgments

We are enormously grateful to Jay Matternes for his generosity in sharing his art, thoughts, and time throughout the development of this book.

We are also thankful to the many colleagues who contributed their time and hard work to this endeavor.

Nick Drew photographed the Matternes study drawings, under the loan management and direction of Carol Butler.

The Matternes murals at NMNH were photographed in situ by Don Hurlbert, Jim DiLoreto, and Kristen Quarles. The deinstallation of the NMNH murals was coordinated by Kara Blond and Carol Butler with project management and planning from Meg Rivers and Siobhan Starrs. The murals were then conserved by Page Conservation, Inc., with consultation from Cathy Hawks and Becky Kaczkowski. Kathy Hollis and Cathy Hawks planned and secured the necessary storage space and equipment. We thank Margie Marino and the staff at the New Mexico Museum of Nature and Science for providing access to the early Eocene mural on display there.

Tom Jorstad, Siobhan Starrs, Kristen Quarles, Diana Marsh, and the Smithsonian Institution Archives staff were of great help in obtaining archival photographs, and we thank Tom Jorstad, Dominic White, and the NMNH Library staff for assistance in researching historical and taxonomic topics. Diana Marsh was especially generous in discussing her historical research.

We also thank Laura Harger and Jody Billert for their work on the book manuscript and layout.
