* Who was this dog whose nose went under the proverbial scientific Xerox machine? She was a Labrador retriever whose head Dr. Craven and Dr. Staymates had received when they were roommates in grad school at Penn State and doing research at the gas dynamics laboratory. They were working on ways to improve detection of explosives and narcotics, and wanted to get a really good computer model of the “amazing chemical detector” that is a dog’s nose. They kept the Lab’s head in a refrigerator in formaldehyde until they could make an MRI model of the inside and outside of her head and nose.
