* The ability of dogs to sense an oncoming migraine is hopeful news to the more than thirty-eight million Americans who suffer from migraines. This skill isn’t just the purview of trained dogs. A neurologist at the University of Pittsburgh surveyed more than a thousand migraine sufferers who have dogs. She reported in a paper in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2013 that one-fourth of those surveyed recognized changes in their dogs’ behavior before a migraine. Self-reporting may skew the figures, and more research is needed, but it’s worth exploring.
