The Dancing Bulrushes

COYOTE WAS WALKING ALONG when he heard the sound of a great dance going on. “Oh,” thought Coyote, “this is wonderful. I will go to the dance. I am one of the best dancers and they will be glad to have me.”

So Coyote hurried on and came to a great crowd dancing on the shore of a lake and he joined in with them. “I am a great dancer,” said Coyote. “You will be glad to have me.” Coyote was very much taken up with his own dancing and paid no attention to the others.

All day long they danced furiously, back and forth, waving their arms. And on into the night they danced, without stopping, bending and swaying and moaning. When dawn finally came, Coyote was barely able to lift his feet and he was secretly wishing the dance was over.

As the sun rose it became lighter and Coyote discovered that he had not been dancing with people at all. He found himself standing in the middle of a field of bulrushes.
